Help with Boer War records 1899-1902 James McHolm Scotland
« on: Wednesday 14 October 15 11:20 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm still on the search for information regarding James McHolm born 1878/79 Dumfries Scotland, and have come across 2 war records, one for a J.C. McHolm and one for a J McHolmes. I have found a death for James Carruthers McHolm in 1944 South Africa, and a passenger list to UK for a J McHolm which states policeman as occupation. I was wondering if there is a place of birth on the war records in order to eliminate them. Many thanks

Thanks Maggsie. I've found him on 1891 Scotland census as well, but that's it.... No death, marriage etc.

Hi

You don't indicate when the passenger list says he arrived but I'm not sure if you are referring to this record but a J.C. McHolm is listed as having been in the Boer War with the South African Constabulary

Thanks 3sillydogs. There is a J McHolm policeman South Africa to Southampton 1909. I'm really clutching at straws trying to find something that relates to 'my' James. He seems to have totally disappeared!

Thanks 3sillydogs, I already have that census, but that's the last I've found of him. By process of elimination on scotlandspeople, I've found a death for a James McHolm in 1966, but haven't seen the record yet, so don't know if it belongs to him. Many thanks

Just thought, why can I not find a ww1 record for him as he would have been of conscription age? National archives have 3 McHolm records, all of them are his brothers.

Perhaps there was a reason he was excluded from service.
