Many thanks for the speedy reply!

I've got my info about the Whittakers from another Ancestry.co.uk user here: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/tree/42296679/family/pedigree - but there are few sources.

I like the idea of getting a copy of David Andrew and Jane Woosnam's marriage licence. I'll see what that turns up.

Thanks again.

but where did that person get their info from? What are their sources? Have they researched using wills and parish records, checking the originals, not just transcriptions?

Have you verified the info?

No, unfortunately this persons family tree is big on family but very light on sources. So, the process of verification starts now! Marriage licence for the two confirmed ancestors as you suggest is a good beginning.

I'll let the group know if anything interesting turns up.

I'd start rather further down if I were you. No point in paying out for docs that may not relate to your family. Work backwards from what you know for sure/already have documented. There are parish registers online at FindMyPast which could save you buying marriage certs and you can check mother's maiden name for registered births by using the GRO index

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

but you still should get at least one birth cert per generation to be sure.

There are wills online up to 1858
https://www.llgc.org.uk/discover/nlw-resources/wills/

and newspapers here
