Who was Martha?
« on: Thursday 15 October 15 13:16 BST (UK) »
On 22 Sept 1867 at Knutsford Union Workhouse Martha LAWSON died age 91, occupation unknown, Eliza Walker of the Union Workhouse was present at the death.

I believe this must be Martha LAWSON aged 88 in 1861 living at her daughter Jane HOLT and son in law Richard's address of Pepper Street, Lymm, states she was born in Lymm, her daughter born Manchester in c1803!

In 1851 she appears to be Martha LAWSON aged 76 living with her son Ephraim LAWSON at Lawton Moor, Northenden, states she was born Lymm, her son born Agden.

Martha LAWSON is aged 60 in 1841 with her husband John and family living near Agden Hall, Rostherne were John is listed as a farmer.

I suspect her marriage to John LAWSON, a farmer, took place on 15 Oct 1807 at Manchester Cathedral, she as Martha SOUTHERN, a widow.

Her daughter Jane SOUTHERN married Richard HOLT in 1825 in Rostherne; I suspect her baptism was on 16 Oct 1800 at St Ann, Manchester, daughter of Henry and Martha SOUTHERN. Jane died in Lymm aged 59 in 1862.

I have so far been unable to discover a marriage of a Henry Southern to a bride Martha in Manchester in order to know what Martha's maiden name was!  ???

Hmmm.  I can't easily see a marriage either.  However here are some Marthas baptised in Lymm around the right sort of time:

Looking at the 1861 census Jane Holt was born Lymm, it was husband Richard born Manchester.
On that basis could this be relevant.

Jane Southern dau of Joseph and Martha
Born 17 Sept 1803 baptised 9 Oct 1803
St Mary, Lymm.

There is also a marriage by Lic of a Joseph Southern and a Martha Harrison  4 Feb 1802 St Mary Lymm

And a birth 3 July 1778 bapt 2 Aug 1778 for a Martha Harrison
dau of John and Jane
St Mary Lymm

I traced Jane through her grandson Enoch on the 1861 census
(RG 9; Piece: 2592; Folio: 137; Page: 4)

He being the son of Ruth HOLT (she from Deans Green as per baptism in 1827.)

Which revealed Martha LAWSON as Jane's mother

Jane is born Manchester and Richard a bricklayer labourer is born Lymm (bapt 1801)
(I speculate he is the son of James HOLT and Margaret nee HULME)
found a marriage here http://cgi.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/

Richard and Jane had a son called Joseph (1826-1827) of Deans Green but have yet to find any other off spring!

As the LAWSON marriage took place in Manchester and the census states Jane born in Manchester, I just imagined Martha's first marriage would take place in Manchester and that her first husband would have died in Manchester. The farmer John Lawson moving out of the rapidly growing city of Manchester and ending up in the Cheshire farmlands!  8) ;D

Jane is born Manchester

Jane Holt is enumerated as follows:

1841: 35 born in county (Cheshire)
1851: 49 b Agden, Cheshire
1861: 58 b Manchester

So I don't think the single Manchester entry is necessarily reliable.

It's funny how you get a fixed train of thought and are convinced it has to be that, until someone shines a light on a complete new arena that you just didn't see or twig! LOL

Thanks for pointing the new research out to me, I've been driving my self mad with this brick wall!

Very best wishes!

Your quite right of course  :-[
I wouldn't mind but I looked at it a couple of times yesterday.
Maybe a trip to Spec Savers is in order!!!!
Pity though because it all fits together so well apart from the fact that I can't find a death/burial for Joseph.

I did find a Joseph SOUTHERN (no age given) of High Legh buried in Rostherne on 24th March 1808 http://cgi.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/ but this is after Martha's second marriage - so I guess it can't be the Joseph I seek ???

Yes, I looked at that one and discounted it because date of death was after Martha's second marriage.
The only other one is for a 72 year old Joseph Southorn.
He  died Tarporley 1803  I discounted him as being to old.
Have you tried searching  Manchester records.
As Martha's second marriage was Manchester it's always possible that they had moved to that area before Joseph's death.
