John Coulter/Jane Morrow

Hi,

I am researching this family.  They come from Killinchy Wood, Killyleagh.

They had 9 children I believe and one, John, came to Australia in 1859.

I am interested in any history, but especially prior to this family.

Have you seen the death of a John Coulter of Killinchy Woods 9 Mar 1878,viewable on GRONI for £2, and his Will on PRONI which gives the names of a number of his children?
Ros Davies website also shows a Will for a John Coulter dated 20 Nov 1857.
Could either of these be you relative?

The Morrows lived in Killyleagh the Coulson only for a generation perhaps .

In the same valuation living in the civil parish of Blaris Lisburn area is the only Coulson to be recorded in Co Down by Griffith at that date.  There are 2 homesteads of Morrows in that parish

Fadge, that is my John Coulter.  I do have a copy of the will.  His son John came to Australia when he was very young.  I do not have any information about this family before John and his wife Jane Morrow.

BallyaltikilliganG, thank you for all the work, but I am researching Coulter (or sometimes Cultra) not Coulson.  Jane Morrow's father's name was Joseph, so that might be the one you found in the Tithe Applotment books.

I do not know how to research back from here.

I went back to Ros Davies Co Down website and who lives in Australia, and eventually found

There are a few 18th century graves with oldest being 1754; email me Ros davies for a gravestone look-up .

next finding more about ‘Killinchy in the Woods’  also known as Killy in the Woods It’s a townland at the extreme west side of Killyleagh parish.  Its also just above Crossgar in the civil parish of Killmore which might have more convenient churches etc   Ros Davies gives more about it under her placename section eg great destitution 20 Mar 1847  [which might mean the Famine]: incendiarism 23 Feb 1850  {which might mean civil unrest]

Griffiths valuation http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ has description details and maps  , try to find the townland on their map.  It gives all the field boundaries and blocks that are buildings BUT their particular map doesn’t have the valuation map references marked upon it.   That’s going to slow down your research.  You could write to Local history Library , South eastern Education and Library headquarters, Ballynahinch Co Down and ask them have they got a marked copy. if they have you could acguire acheap photocopy, your map references within the townland s are 1 to 5 /
