Query 1841 census Gravesend Kent
« on: Thursday 22 October 15 02:00 BST (UK) »
On the 1841 census for Judith (Should be Judas) POSWILLO from Family Search there is a line entitled "Residence Note"   Mariane Verade  and another "Affiliate Record Type"  Institution.
Does any one know what these two answers mean?  Were they in a Work house of some sort?  Tried googling  Mariane Verade but nothing found.
On A..try the name is PORWELL and where born given as Frongren and thought "At last I know where he came from!!"  but alas it seems to be "Foreigner"  mis-transcribed.
Any thoughts most welcome.

Hello HeatherR,
Bring up the actual Census Return again on A*try. At the bottom of the screen it should say image  21 of 26. Scroll back to image 15. Left side of right hand page, under 'Place' is the address which looks like Marrane or Mariane Verdane and, as keyboard86 says, is likely to be Marine Parade.
No "Profession - Gent" listed at Porwell's end of the street but nothing to suggest Workhouse or Institution.
               Regards,     Dod.

The 1851 census suggests it is Gibraltar (listed under Judah Poswilo).

The 1841 census will only show whether someone was "born in the county" - Yes or No, or whether Scottish, Irish or Foreign.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Richard, Dod, keyboard86 and KGarrad,
Thank you for your help.  The other Rootschat link was one of mine, but hadn’t found the other two. The facebook query is a few years old but will send them an email and see what happens.   Have looked back at page 15 and the “P” appears to be written the same on both pages so Marine Parade it is.  Did have Gibraltar as the birth place of Judah/Joseph but haven’t been able to prove it so when I saw Frongren hoped it was another clue to help!
Cheers
HeatherR
