McClure Family
« on: Friday 23 October 15 00:12 BST (UK) »
Trying to trace Nellie Mary McClure born in Scotland in 1880 had a sister named Elizabeth.
The family moved to Nottingham where Nellie was confirmed in 1896 at St Peters Church by W H Harding. The McClures were butchers. Nellie married a Derek Boddington who also was a butcher. They had a baby named  Dorothy who died age 2. Nellie divorced Mr Boddington and married Edward Clarke in Cape Town South Africa Nellie died 4.9.1934. Her sister Elizabeth married a Godwin.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Welcome from me too. ;D

I'm not seeing any marriages in England/Wales for a McClure to a Boddington?

However, there is a Nottingham marriage for an Elizabeth McClure:

There is only one baptism on the Notts CD for a McClure who was a butcher

Lucy was buried 2 days later

Thomas Howitt McClure birth registered September quarter  1854  Nottingham district

1891 census

Census ref: Class: RG12/ Piece: 2675/ Folio: 81/ Page: 58

The McClure children's births were registered in Basford district. Mary Ellen McClure in 1884 is probably Mary H in the census. The names Helen/Ellen tend to be interchangeable - and Nellie is a pet name for these.
The birth of Jane Elizabeth McClure was registered in December quarter of 1889 (a bit late if her age in the census is correct)

I can't see this family anywhere in the next two censuses, but this looks as though it might be Thomas' death in SA:

These are the baptisms for Thomas and Rebecca's children on the FHS CD, all at St Mary Magdalene, Hucknall Torkard; Rebecca;s name is the same for all, but you'll see that Thomas's  surname is spelled differently and his occupation changes::

1881 10 23   Frank             Thomas Howitt   McCLURE         Innkeeper

Marriage at Nott St Mary

1879 07 08   Thomas Howitt   McCLURE   and Rebecca   HASLAM

It looks as though Rebecca's first husband was William Haslam; they lived in Hucknall Torkard where William was first a butcher then a publican (sounds familiar!) Children of this first marriage:
1873 10 05      William Samuel   HASLAM
1875 05 02      John Henry   HASLAM
1877 04 08      Frances Mary   HASLAM
1879 10 19      Thomas Webster   HASLAM

Now this looks odd as Thomas was baptised after Rebecca's marriage to Thomas McClure but it seems he was born before the marriage so presumably his father rather than stepfather acknowledged on the chirch record

Births Mar 1879
Haslam    Thomas Webster         Basford
Bradbury (Sedgeley, Bilston, Warrington)
Cooper (Sedgeley, Bilston)
Kilner/Kilmer (Leic, Notts)
Greenfield (Liverpool)
Holyland (Anywhere and everywhere, also Holiland Holliland Hollyland)
Pryce/Price (Welshpool, Liverpool)
Rawson (Leicester)
Upton (Desford, Leics)
Partrick (Vera and George, Leicester)
Marshall (Westmorland, Cheshire/Leicester)

A Mr William Haslam was proprietor of the Seven Stars Inn in Hucknall Torkard in the 1870s. He had sons called George and William --- George died aged 21 after falling into a copper full of boiling liquor in 1876.According to the reports, George had a brother called William, and looking at the family in 1861, William was 16 at the time (parents William and Sarah of the 7 Stars -- George was elsewhere at the time).

So that would fit with this death:
Deaths Sep 1878
HASLAM    William    33    Basford    7b   95

suggesting that Rebecca may have been widowed when she was in early pregnancy and with 3 children already under the age of 5.

And here's a marriage which looks likely:

Marriages Mar 1871
Daykin    Kendel        Belper    7b   643
HASLAM    William         Belper    7b   643
TURTON    Emma         Belper    7b   643
Webster    Rebecca         Belper    7b   643
