my family names: COGGINS, FINNERTY,FEENEY, BOLAND- Easky
« on: Saturday 24 October 15 01:21 BST (UK) »
in the mid 1860's my COGGINS family left Ireland for the US - Thomas and Ellen [Finnerty] Coggins brought many children [and very young!] and Thomas' mother Mary [FEENEY] Coggins.

I have found my GG Grandfather's birth registration - Timothy Coggins in 1864. And I believe Ellen's mothers death- Nellie [BOLAND] Finnerty also in 1864.  Timothy was born in Carrownpadeen, Easky, Dromore West, Co Sligo.

Via obit here in Massachusetts - Mary [Feeney] Coggins was born in Finod, 1787. She lived to be 96!!!

Wondering if I can find more -or deaths for Andrew Coggins - Mary's husband [and Thomas' father] who I would guess died prior to them emigrating?  And anything on Ellen [Finnerty] Coggins father - per he mother's death registration - Timothy [Thady] Finnerty???

Hi There & Welcome

Our civil registration only began in 1864.

As Andrew died prior to this you won't find a death cert for him.

This is the GV for your search area.

http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/sligo/easky.htm

Andrew doesn't feature on it and I'm wondering is the Thomas his son.

This could indicate that Andrew had died prior to the GV being done ie late 1850"s, early 1860"s.

Thank You Tara,

I have looked at Griffiths, found what you did, before I found the Obits that confirmed my work.

Would you know if there are local church records there [they were Catholic] prior to the registration?

And an opinion question for anyone....

The clearly made it through the Famine...and then decided to leave circa 1865. That to me seems odd...was something else going on in that time frame??   I wondered if there was a sale of the land they were on...to do that move with 4 small children and my GG Grandfather as an infant seems unusual.

Thank you....Laurie

Hi Laurie

Easky only appears to have records back to 1864.

People moved all the time , it wasn't rare.

Farming was a hard lifestyle, even at the best of times.
