Charles Greer and family
« on: Saturday 24 October 15 11:04 BST (UK) »
Charles Greer b. 1811, m Esther Hunter 1830 in Fahan. They lived in Dunfanachy Donegal and had 7/8 children before moving to Scotland around 1858 - 60.
I have this information but no confirmation of their years in Ireland and am hoping someone can help me with finding the birth records of Charles, Esther and their children.
I believe that Charles' parents were James and Martha also from Donegal.
Any help would be most welcome.

Hi There

Do you have a religion for the family?

If RC then records are online at nli.ie

Charles GRIER (F) Richard (M) Jane
married March 17 1830 in Fanad, Co. Donegal - Presbyterian
Esther HUNTER (F) James (M) Jane
Witnesses: Hugh Hunter and Frank WILLIAMS

Probable baptism for Charles GRIER in Clondavaddog on Aug 24 1805
address given as Ballyheerin (F) Richard GREIR (M) Jane Mc JUNKINS

Siblings shown between 1802 - 1814

There is no immediate baptism for Esther HUNTER
but there are parents James HUNTER and Jane WILSON in Donegal at that time period

I don't see any baptisms for Charles' and Esther's children
I'll have another look but the parish used may not be online or even available

Tara and Myluck, The family is most definitely Presbyterian and I thank you both for replying.
The children of Charles and Esther  from my information, are:
James        b.1836
Richard      b. 1842
Helen         b.1844
Jane          b. 1847   ??
Martha       b. 1848
Esther        b. 1851
Charles      b. 1853
John          b. 1857
All born in Ireland

This ties in with the family names but there are an awful lot of similar names in the same places.
Thanks again

I think my ancestor Mary Greer, who married namesake Thomas Greer, was Charles sister.

Marys death certificate in Glasgow, age 52 in 1867, lists Richard Greer and Jane Wilson as her parents.  According to Glasgow Mitchell Library Poor Relief records, one of Mary and Thomas's children, my ancestor Humphrey 1835-1879, was born in Donegal. They were Protestant.

Siblings Mary and Charles were both at the same address in 1861, with their respective families, at 8 Drygate lane, Glasgow. Charles wife Esther is not present in Scotland in 1861; nor could I find Charles in Scotland in 1871.

Where can I find Irish marriage and birth dates for Mary and Thomas and their children?

Where can I find Irish marriage and birth dates for Mary and Thomas and their children?

Non RC marriages were recorded in the Irish statutory registers from 1845 onwards. Prior to that you have to search church records, not all of which have survived and not all of which are on-line.

If Mary Greer was Presbyterian and lived in Dunfanaghy, then she likely attended Dunfanaghy Presbyterian church. Their baptism and marriage records start in 1830, so it may be touch and go as to whether her marriage is included, but if her children were baptised there, then you should be OK. Not sure if these records are on-line anywhere. Try rootsireland (subscription). If not there’s a copy in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast, but a personal visit is required to view them there.
