Is DEVAUDEN an Irish name?
« on: Thursday 14 July 05 00:01 BST (UK) »
An old family friend who died in 1974 was a bit of a mystery man. His name was James Matthew Devauden and was born on 27th September 1891. There's no record of a birth in England and an old family story has it that he was an 'Irish Count' whatever that might mean.

I suspect he was born in Ireland. He had no family that we knew about. Has anyone come across this name anywhere in Ireland - or anywhere else for that matter? Searching Ancestry.com draws a complete blank (almost).

Thanks,
Chris.

Hi Chris,

Not as a name but Googling finds a place called Devauden in Monmouthshire (Gwent) in Wales.

Ancestry has a record of a marriage in 1992 of a Devauden.

I guess there could be lots of spelling variants - with and without a 'De'.  VAUDIN (and variants) is not all that uncommon.

Hello JAP,

It turns out there are several other small places in England called Devauden. However, apart from a marriage listed in 1982 I've yet to find anyone - other than my man - with that name; nor can I find any reference to it in any book on surnames. Most strange!

Thanks,
Chris.

Has anyone noticed this topic is from 2005? Indications are that the person in question was not born in Ireland but it's difficult to know if OP has gotten more information by now.
