Andy, I have got birth/baptism for William McHolam for 1842 parents John McHolam and Margaret Laidlaw. I live in Ireland and have found that they pronounce McHolm as McHolam. John was Irish.

Have you looked at this death?  It may have both parents' surnames on it - possibly Laidlaw and Halliday.
