And leaving Australia, South Australian Advertiser 26 January 1878:  "SOUTH AUSTRALIAN, ship, 1,010 tons, John Bruce, for London.  Passengers . . . Mr. and Mrs Bastin,  and the Misses Bastin (5) . . . "

Notice in reply 30 that DB gave - the marriage date for Walter Bowden Lunn and Margaret was 19 May 1928 - that was the date as sworn at the Village of Arthur in the County of Wellington.  The date of the marriage in the left hand column shows 24 th May 1928. The date of 24 May 1928 was also given on the petition for naturalization of Walter Bowden Lunn in US Dist Court Los Angeles California 1 st May 1957. Its not a transcription error.

Wonder if the details of the bride and groom could be sworn in a few days before the actual marriage  ??? Never come across a difference in dates before.  :-\

Sandra

Added  - Checked a few Ontario marriages and some were sworn before the actual date of marriage

Thanks everyone for all your help.

Was wondering why John wasn't with family in census returns after 1881.
Then found this article (thanks for pointing me in the direction of Trove!!)

Need a second opinion as to whether this is the same John.

John Bastin who married Mary Cornish was the son of Edward a chemist from Cornwall. Youngest daughter Ethel was born in Stoke Newington. Also Edward from Cornwall appears to die on Stoke Newington (probate records).

If this is a second marriage would there be a divorce record for his first marriage?

Looks too much of a coincidence doesn't it? So it looks as if John may have left the family in England and returned to Australia. There may not have been a divorce - who in Australia would know whether he was married or not?
