Born in the USA - Illinois
« on: Thursday 14 July 05 07:29 BST (UK) »
A family I am researching - have one son who (on the British census') was listed as being born in Illinois, America.

The other children were all born in Yorkshire, England - so if anyone could help me find out anything about his birth - or the family's time in USA I would be grateful.

He was  George M GREEN born c. 1856.

(son of George & Mary Ann GREEN)  They  already had a son, William T Green,  born the year before in England, and another child Cora A. born back in England, two years later - so the time there was pretty short.

Also,  George M seems to disappear from the British census' after  the 1871 one - maybe he returned to USA ?

Any help appreciated !

Hi Kathy.

I've been working on your family but not having much luck.  Unfortunately they were in the US between Census periods.

I've been looking at Passenger Lists but have only found two arrivals in the US in 1856 where there is a George and Mary Green together --  but no infant William!

Geo. Thomas Green  26 Carpenter
Mary Teresa Green  28  Wife
"Osprey" Arr Nov. 14, 1856 in NY
Departed from Glasgow

Geo. Green  25  No Occupation listed
Mary Green  22
"Thornton"  Arr Oct 27, 1856 NY
Departed from L'pool

Didn't find a George and Mary together in 1855.

Do you have birthdates for George and Mary?
And what George's occupation might have been?
Did they have or use middle names/initials?

Thank you so much for your help in this search !!

I know it is probably an impossible task.....maybe they were just visiting relatives.....it seems as if they were there for such a short time.

(I have only just reached this discovery (of the illinois birth).....

The father....is only ever shown as George Green born c. 1830/1 - in the census of 1861, they were back in Yorkshire and he (aged 30) was a farmer with 70 acres of land.

(In 1871- 97 acres & 1881 -142 1/2  acres)

His wife was Mary Ann - the same age as George .

Baby William is def. William T on 1871 - but looks more like J on 1861.....so now I an not entirely sure.

thank you again

Kathy
I guess it is possible that they didn't take baby William with them....

Hi Kathy!

Thanks for the additional info on the bd  - I was looking in that general age group assuming they were young parents.

Interesting point on George having that much land to return to and farm --  does it seem likely to you that they would have made such a long journey for a visit w/ a possibly? pregnant Mary and an infant in steerage??  70 Acres would be gentry class -- wouldn't it?    Both the Geo/Mary's I found on the Pass Lists were in Steerage.   hmmmmm....

Will take another look today and also look for possible Green relatives with English roots.

Any possibles for Mary Ann's maiden name?  For her to have gone and either taken or left an infant behind, might indicate it was her family they were visiting.

I suppose you have no idea where in Illinois??

Fingers crossed  but not sure that will be enough ???

kathy

I haven't found William's birth yet.....

There is a marriage (in Sheffield) reg. Sept. q. 1854 between
George Green & Mary Ann Gambles.

(not confirmed until I have a birth cert.)

I will spend some time later today searching for a relevant cert. to send for.

They had more children later....including daughters who they named Mary Ann, Sarah A.  (prob. Alice), Cora Annie (this name was passed down through several generations) and Cassandra......

I am sure I should be able to find their births !

I don't think they were 'gentry'...more likely tenant farmers....renting the land from a bigger landowner.....they had to servants & the daughters married 'workers'.

Kathy,   no further  findings on George and Mary Ann Green together with/without infant William.

Nothing below is a direct match, but MAYBE will be of use for the extended family??

Maybe planned to immigrate but got homesick or for some other reason decided not to stay in US?

I'll look in 1860 US for Green and Gamble/Gambles and let you know.

Kathy,

1860 US Census IL

only 123 hits for Green!   Are George's parents accounted for in Eng in 1851 and 1861?  How about his siblings?  Are his parents born circa 1800 in England?

Gambles - Zero
Gamble --  1 hit   Saml Gamble 30 b. Eng Laborer Boarder in household of Joseph and Ann Scott from Ireland in St. Clair Co., IL

Of course if they went to visit or stay with a married sister, looking for Green/Gamble will not be productive!

Think that is all I can do for now until you find some additional info.  Good Luck!

Hi Kathy

I am really grateful for all your searching !!  I will get back to you after a bit more 'digging'......

The family are back in England in 1861......not found yet in 1851....next job!

Is/was there an eqivilent of our BMD's in Illinois ?    Would his birth have been registered ?  Were the records kept by state? or by county or what?
