Buriels if you were not wealthy -Catholic families in Kilmore, Armagh
« on: Friday 30 October 15 20:31 GMT (UK) »
Hello

Any historians out there?  Could someone brief me on who would pay for the burial if families were not financially secure?  Am assuming there would not be a headstone either, or did families feel this was of great importance?

Regards

Sam

Depends on individual cases!!
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

See paragraph  "Poor Law Unions Burials including deceased paupers"

Relations, friends, workmates and neighbours often helped.   In my own family, money was sent home by members who had emigrated for the purchase of a headstone.  This was in early 1900s.  I have heard of a few cases where the employer of the deceased has contributed.
