Charles Dunleavey - Foxford?
« on: Saturday 31 October 15 20:00 GMT (UK) »
I've been stuck for a long time on my maternal great-grandfather, Charles/Charley Dunleavey.

I can't find a birth registered for him in England, and family murmurings point to him possibly being born in Foxford, County Mayo.

As far as I can make out, he was born in 1876 (death certificate states he was 79, although this could be out by a few years!)

He married Phoebe Ellen Caulfield in Barnsley, South Yorkshire in 1918. He was 39, Phoebe 25.

He is described as a bachelor on his wedding certificate. But it is possible that he was married/had children in Ireland.

His father is named as Barney Dunleavey, a farmer.

He died in 1955 in Batley, West Yorkshire.

Any help/advice is appreciated!  :)

Hello and welcome  :)

This looks very possible in 1911 index

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWKS-PVQ

There is a Charlie Dunlavy in 1901 4333/96/42

He is lodging in Ecclesfield and born Ireland according to that census. The ages in 1911 and 1901 don't match though.

We'll carry on looking!

There is a Charles born 1876 with parents Bryan Dunleavy and Ann Devany -'Curnarrow, Mayo'. Whilst checking out this name, I came across some old postings of yours, I think.
That could possibly be your family.

Thanks

Yes, I've posted elsewhere before :-)

Is it possible that Barney could be Bryan? I went through all the possibles for Barney - like Barnabus, Barnaby etc ... I got stuck there with his father's name.

There's a possibility that we're wrong with the Ireland link for Charles (looking at the info in the link given), and that it was his father that was born in Ireland.

Bernard and Bryan are often used interchangeably and Barney is a diminutive of Bernard.

Here is the parish record http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632328#page/64/mode/1up
He is the second on the page. The rest of the information is on the next page. There are blanks between them.

Thanks! That's the first time I've seen all three names linked together :)

What's the last column?

The columns show father; mother; child. Then residence; male sponsor and female sponsor - godparents.

1911 shows 7 children born alive and 5 still living to Bryan and Nancy. There are other Dunleavys around and Charles seems to be a family name.

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

I came across this once http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/feedback/1901/Mayo/Toomore/Foxford/1593992/

could it be possible that Catherine is daughter-in-law, and grandson Charles is my Charles' son?
It's long been thought Charles had another family before he married Phoebe, considering he was 39 when he married her.
