Surrey and City of London Oath Rolls

Robert Phipps - Plaster's Company - 1696

I'm not sure how many Roberts we've got on the go here.  Best leave you to sort things out.  I'm getting muddled.

I don't have access to either the Surrey & London oath rolls or the Apprenticeship abstracts (both on FindMyPast?).

One obvious point is that if Robert the Plasterer's widow was Elizabeth, he is more likely to have married Elizabeth Warner in crooked lane than someone called Mary.

Lilley, could you clarify what happened in 1696? Was it the start of an Apprenticeship?

Thanks again

It just says:

Surrey and City of London Livery Company Association Oath Rolls

Name    Robert Phipps
Title    Livery
Company    Plasterers
Parish    City of London
Year of Oath    1696
Number of signatories in parish    187

Nothing more useful than that

On The Freemen of London there's a John Warner Phipps - fishmongers.  But this one is the son of John - an apothecary.  So possibly a cousin?

I hadn't really focused on this paragraph of Lilly's but re-reading it I was reminded of another Phipps mentioned in the original will whose middle name I could not read and whose relationship was not explained John ? Phipps coal merchant, who shares one bequest with son Robert.

John Warner Phipps appears in several directories as a coal merchant at  7, Wardrobe court, Great Carter lane.

He was born to John Phipps and Elizabeth and baptised on June 17 1739 in a Presbyterian church in Old Jewry, so the non-conformist link fits too.

So now I'm really interested in tracing the link between the two, not least since my ancestor Thomas Blunt, who married Mary Phipps the orphan granddaughter mentioned in the will, became an apothecary, despite his father, who also died when he was young, having worked at the Bank of England.

(I haven’t yet found apprenticeship records for Thomas b 1772 or his brother Robert b 1766, who was also a chemist, but as they set up shop In Southwark, they were probably not in a City of London guild.)

Anyway, belated thanks for more very useful information.

Alan

The same parents John and Elizabeth Phipps had another child, Elizabeth, baptised in the same Presbyterian church in Old Jewry on 9 September 1733.

Can't yet find a marriage or death for John Warner Phipps, his parents' marriage or details of his father’s business or apprenticeship.

It looks as though your Robert Phipps and John Warner Phipps's father were brothers.

I've glanced through the Will of Elizabeth Phipps, who died 1773 in Mile End.   It's quite heavy going to read, so I'm going to leave the details to you.

The basics are that she is leaving money to her son, John Warner Phipps, her nephews Robert Phipps the younger of Walthamstow and ??John Tannings??.    Also to Thomas Stark of Goodman's Fields

I don't know why I didn't see this one earlier:

1721 - John Phipps son of Robert Phipps of London - plasterer

Apprenticed to Joseph ?  Citizen & Apothecary of London

Try the website " London Lives 1690-1800", many entries for the Phipps family/families from Walthamstow, Enfield and surrounding areas.
