Ellen Casson's father
« on: Tuesday 03 November 15 13:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone find this child's father?

Ellen (Eleanor) Casson, born circa 1851 in Workington.
She married Thomas Little in St John's, Workington on the 18th March 1874. She gave her age as 23 years and her father's name as Roger Casson.

She named her first son, Roger, too, so I am assuming that his name has not been misspelt.

Other than an Eleanor Casson (whose father is listed as Robert Casson) on the census, the only other Ellen Casson of the 'right' age, can be found with her mother, Jane Casson on the 1861 census.
Jane was born in Workington circa 1831 as Jane Madders, (Mathers). Her youngest child, Frances, who had been born during the March quarter of 1860, has been given the middle name of 'Roger'.

However, if this is the 'right' family, I cannot find a marriage between a Jane Mathers (Madders) and a Roger Casson.

Can anybody find this marriage?
Jane was still with her mother in 1851 (as Jane Mathers), so if a marriage took place it should have happened between 1851 and 1861.

Thanks

Sue

You may need to investigate this chap -

Deaths Sep 1859
CASSON    Roger        Cockermouth    10b   293

No age I'm afraid https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J8CN-MQM  :-\

Said to have been aged 24 in Harrington in 1851. "Rodger"
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Snap just about to post that death!

If Jane had a child early 1860 then she may well have used Roger as middle name in his memory.

There is a report of an inquest in the Carlisle Journal of July 8th 1859 on a Roger Casson, shoemaker of Workington, who was found dead in his bed - the inquest found he died of a rupture of the heart.

Sounds a possibility?

a few more details in the Whitehaven News, including the fact that Roger Casson was married.

July 14th 1859 Whitehaven News
Sudden Death at Workington
A very sudden death took place on Tuesday week in Pow Street Workington. A person of the name of Roger Casson, who had lately joined the Derwent Musical Brass Band, took his instrument down on to the Cloffocks, and was playing upon it a ten o’clock on Monday night. He afterwards went home and ate a hearty supper before retiring to rest. Between two and three o’clock on Tuesday morning, his wife was awakened by his breathing heavily, and shaking violently. She immediately got up, struck a light, called a neighbour, and hurried off for the doctor, but when the latter arrived the man was dead. A coroner’s inquest was held by Henry Bell, Esq. of Cockermouth, and a respectable jury, and a verdict as to cause of death viz., rupture of the heart, returned.

It says married but can't find a marriage.

1851 there's a Rodger Casson 24 from Lancashire but lodging Harrington Cumberland who is a shoemaker unmarried, might be a different chap of course - is Harrington far from Workington?

Hi All,

I think you have cracked it! Still no marriage to be found though, but evidence looks conclusive!

Thanks so much

Sue
