Richard Sumpter 1763 - 1817
« on: Wednesday 04 November 15 12:22 GMT (UK) »
FindMyPast has a marriage record for a Richard Sumpter and Mary Trust. 12th August 1787 Stoke Damerel.

Can anyone see a connection between 'this' Richard Sumpter and Histon in Cambridgeshire?

The original notes that they were both otp, no marital status for Richard but Mary noted as spinster. Both signed Mary surname was Trist. Elizabeth Trist one of the witnesses also signed.
Richard was a house carpenter.

It looks more likely that Richard & Mary were both born in Devon.

Colin
Thank you for the information. I have to agree with you that this 'Richard Sumpter' was probably born, and certainly lived in Devon.
The Richard Sumpter born in Histon was Lord of the Manor there after his father died. There is no record locally (as far as I can tell) of him having a wife and children. (or being a carpenter)

Thanks again for your help.

Plus there is a death for a 75 year old Richard SUMPTER at Stoke Damerel 6 May 1838, abode Portland Place. There were 3 burials for young SUMPTER children there in 1799 - Mary 4, Joseph 5 & Richard 2. Another son appears to have been born in 1799 (not baptised until 1812) and was buried there in 1848 - abode also Portland Place (occ Shipwright).

A History of the County of Cambridge and Ely, 1989

"Church of St Andrew - the north transept used as a schoolroom in 1836, had been partitioned off as a vestry by 1843, while the south transept was used for burials of the Archer and Sumpter** families, Lords of the Histon manor".

** Mon(umental) Inscr(iptions) Cambs

Monumental Inscriptions are available at Cambridge Records Office. Might they contain any mention of Richard, died 1817 and possible family.

DOB7  Thank you; although I was reasonably sure, your info confirms that the 'Histon" Richard did not marry Eliz Trist.

hanes t. There's tons of info about the Archers and Sumpters in local records; it just seemed unusual that Richard didn't marry.

Thanks again for your help

I don't know who did the dirty, but a Richard Sumpter had an illegitimate child with Anne Edwards. There were bastardy bonds in 1813 and 1816 for him to maintain the child.  I can only assume it's the same chap and he's paying for his misdeeds and not just offering to pay for somebody else's child (which sometimes happens).

Maybe he was just a player :)
