Well I can see one of yours there Skoosh but none of my names, I guess that means they were working for other people.

Though one of those 9 tanners in 1841 ( 12 in 1861) would have been my 3xG grandfather.

Yes, I fell on that - then realised none of my Downies from Linlithgow were on it, despite the impression that generations of them had been employed / employed others in it.

Some wrong info from me on that link Gow67. Then again I had only been doing genealogy for 3 months back then.

ThrefallYorky, the marriage I was thinking of would be my GG aunt Marion Steen to George Downie, a shoemaker. Her father,my 3xG grandfather James, a tanner. His, Alexander Downie, a shoemaker.

1852 the date.

Ah, mine was via a James Downie who married an Elizabeth Bowie in 1837, Seoras. James' dad was a Robert Downie, and there was a brother, Alexander, there too. Robert's parents were Clephan / Clephas / Stephan (take your choice) Downie, and Mary Baxter, and I seem to recall his parents were a David Downie and a Janet Greig. There seemed to be an Alexander in each generation, andf a lot of shoemaking! Always worth checking things out, isn't it?.

Actually, there is a distant link, Seoras - just sorted it out, today! Not very close, though, sorry
