What is "Ganne" in "Aged 74 Richard West Ganne was buried"?
« on: Thursday 05 November 15 12:32 GMT (UK) »
Hello, can anyone interpret the word after Richard West in this parish burial entry from 1705 Langton, Yorkshire? Looks like Gann:e but I can't think what that would mean.

I understand that the colon superscript is an abbreviation. e.g. Sen:e for Senior (where the e is more like an epsilon) but that doesn't help much.

I have seen son spelled Sonne but this doesn't look like Sonne and anyway son is spelled correctly the line above.

Any ideas?
Jeremy

Is it his occupation? Tanner?

Richard West married 4 November 1662 Langton by Malton, York, England.  Wife Cisley (sic).

I'm not sure it is a G as it isn't quite the same as the G in Grace just above.

Thanks now I look at it differently it certainly could be a T and the "ann" looks fairly definite. Hadn't thought of an occupation but it looks the most obvious solution now.

Incidentally if parish records were written by the parish clerk then it is possible that this burial entry was written by another Richard West (son?) as there is another Richard West burial 5 years later with "who had been Parish clarke many years". There are 2 burials of wives of Richard Wests - Cicely and Jane although I have not found the Jane marriage.
