Certainly looks like an Australian mounted soldier, the accoutrements (leg wear, saddle bag) are similar to those on the memorial to the Australian Light Horse (google images).  As to the date http://www.chermsidedistrict.org.au/01_cms/details.asp?ID=292 would suggest 1900-1910 would be right.

It's difficult to get a clear picture of the badge - this is my best effort.  I haven't identified it yet - hopefully Rootschatters will rise to the challenge.

It looks like there is a circular laurel wreath surrounding the centre, surmounted by a George V crown.

Thank you Philip

After doing some more digging do we think it could be Scottish Horse a territorial unit.
Also when would units be rebadged after King George V became King.

I would agree Scottish Horse, formed in 1900 in South Africa and the badge changed in 1903 with crown added, the shoulder title in the shape of an elipse would be "Scottish Horse" The bandolier is cetainly pre ww1 and likely Boer War.
Llike MaxD i initially thought ALH as the slouch hat and pugaree is so typical, that cap wouldn't be out of place today on an Aussie infantryman.

Great pic

Cracking work on the badge identification .  I hadn't even got close!

It's great when pics get identified.  All you need now is a name.

All the best
Philip
