Thanks for all the records. How I discovered John Belshaw,1807-1868,I was looking for his daughter Jane's marriage. On the entry on Family Search and Ancestry it gives Jane's father as John. The marriage was 1866 in Newtownards. Going back I found that John's wife was Fanny McRobert 1817-1868.
I was able to find some of Fanny's family but not John's. John was a weaver but who his father was or what he did I've no idea. The John from Co Armagh seems a likely match.
A while back I was in touch with someone who also had a Jane Belshaw in their tree but their family came from Antrim and had a Richard which I don't have.
I hope some of this helps.

I'm still wondering about the way you've traced back your Belshaws  :-\

What's listed for Jane's residence and her father's occupation on the marriage certificate? Do names of witnesses help connect to other relatives?
How did you establish that John Belshaw's wife was Fanny McRobert?
Why is the John from Armagh a 'likely match'? is it because there seems to be a link there or merely you've chosen him as the best possible match?

I don't have a copy of Jane Belshaw's marriage certificate only the record I found on Family Search and Ancestry. It gives John Belshaw as Jane's father and Joseph McMillan as James' father.I don't know who the witness were.
I remember my dad mentioning the name Belshaw,McMillan was his middle name after his mother Janet McMillan.I know that I'm right back to John,it's beyond that I'm lost.Maybe John Belshaw's father was James?

You really do need to have a look at Jane's marriage certificate as that seems to be the basis of your searching further back. It may, or may not, say her father was deceased. It may give you a residence to investigate further in valuation records, etc, It will give you the location of the marriage and names of 2 witnesses. You can view it on GRONI's website after purchasing a few credits.

Ok,I'll look on Groni. according to my records Jane's parents both died in 1868,so they were both alive when she married. Re Derek Beatie ,I was told that he just copies records from other sites,ie Ros Davis,he doesn't even live in Ireland.
I was told that it's cheaper to get certificates from Roscommon, how do I do that?
   Thanks for your help

Another thought is about christian names and how they are repeated in families.John and Fanny had 2 sons named John. The first one died, the second married an Anna Smyth. They had about 10 children, there was a John 1867,William 1862,Alax 1861,Ruben John 1875,James 1876 and Hugh 1884
They also had a son Hugh McRobert Belshaw 1850
Jane and James had 2 sons,William 1872 and Hugh abt 1952.It could be that John Belshaw's father was a John,Hugh,William or James going on the christian names that came after him.

sandyjose, you disappoint me, I quote "Re Derek Beatie, I was told that he just copies records from other sites,ie Ros Davis,he doesn't even live in Ireland." What an astonishing thing to repeat about someone who has placed his work on the people associated with a location Newtownards online. His website shows his many other interests.  He is to be encouraged and he seeks improvement himself so I hope he continues his researches on Newtownards and the two other places he is interested in and gets better at it all the time. You owe him an apology, and at least spell his name right.  I found several bits of information on his website I had not picked up from elsewhere .
As to where he lives, that thought has never occurred to me, and I have been in direct communication with him for a year. Really that disappoints me, Ros Davies has lived In Australia all her married life, Raymond of Raymond's Co Down website  lives in Scotland, Bill McCartney, a strong contributor has lived in Canada for many years, as I have in England, Aghadowey can speak for herself.
