St Enoder ancestors before 1684
« on: Sunday 08 November 15 19:04 GMT (UK) »
I have found a marriage (on Cornwall OPC) of Samuel GROSE and Amy JAMES in St Enoder on 2 Mar 1684.

There are GROSE (including variants) baptisms in St Enoder going back to 1624 but I can't find Samuel.  I can't find a suitable baptism anywhere in Cornwall.

There are JAMES baptisms in St Enoder going back to 1577 but I can't find Amy.  I can't find a suitable baptism anywhere in Cornwall.

FreeBMD doesn't have anything.  Nor does familysearch.  I have looked on the Rootschat Cornwall resources board to see if any links there would help, but haven't found anything to help.

So I am left with two questions:

1) Does anyone have access to the St Enoder register to see if bthe actual record names a parent or witness to the marriage?

2) Does anyone have any ideas where else I could look online (I am not mobile so I can't get to Cornwall!)

Thanks for reading this post.  Any help will be gratefully received.
Philip

you can access scans of the registers via the FamilySearch site

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01gg0/

The marriage is well before Hardwicke's Marriage Act, so unlikely to show any witnesses or parents.

The are transcribed records here as well

Not all records survive, not all are legible, not all have been transcribed, not all are online. Also, you're getting to the stage where the groom may have been born during the Civil War or Commonwealth period when there are many missing records - it's known as the Commonwealth Gap.

nothing on the marriage to help. Neither are noted as otp, not noted as of anywhere but I don't think that means they were necessarily otp.

Many, many thanks for the link.  I hadn't realised that familysearch had the option of searching scans of registers that had not been indexed.  Many happy hours lie ahead!

I probably can't take this line back further, but nearly 350 years is pretty good, so I will now start working forwards and sideways from Samuel and Amy.

Thank you again!
