Getting Started
« on: Tuesday 10 November 15 12:11 GMT (UK) »
I've not been able to find anything at all on my family history and am wondering if anyone would be willing to private message back and forth with advice/help/information?

Thanks,
V

Unless it involves living people you would be far better putting any names, places of birth and dates you have on here, that way you will have a lot of people looking for you. It is surprising what a lot of eyes can find out!

I don't have a lot to go on unfortunately, but the person of interest is James McGregor 1928-1965
Kirkintilloch. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Do you have the death certificate to see what details are listed?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

No Birth, Death or Marriage Certificate unfortunately.
Nothing seems to be showing up online so I'm not sure what to do.

Several likely hits (and one precise hit)  for a death on ScotlandsPeople. As death is 1965 you will have to pay to order the certificate to confirm if you have the right one. There is a 50 year cut-off for deaths, so in 2016 (just two months to wait!) this will be downloadable from the website.

I just paid to see the death certificate on ScotlandsPeople and it says Mothers Surname "Not Permissible". Any idea why this would be?
Sorry, I'm completely new to this so have a lot to learn.
Thanks,
V

"Mother's name not permissable" is explained here http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Content/FAQs/Questions/index.aspx?64

You cannot view 1965 death details online.  (1965 death will be viewable in 2016).  If you must view the details of a 1965 death now on SP then you must pay and order the certificate (£12, I think).
