Hughes family of Llanfachraeth
« on: Tuesday 10 November 15 18:01 GMT (UK) »
I believe that Evan Hughes (1843 - 1902) born Llanfachraeth became Dr Evan Thomas Hughes who practiced in Holyhead during the latter half of the 1800's. He is supposedly a relation of my Great Grandmother Elinor, but I have failed to find a link. Evan is easy to locate on the census records, eg as an 8 year old in 1851 at Tan Rallt, Llanfachraeth and later throughout his life.
His parents are listed as William Hughes, Farmer aged 49 and Margaret Hughes aged 50, both born Llanfachraeth. There are 6 other children listed - the eldest John born 1822 again in Llanfachraeth.

Can anyone find a marriage for his parents somewhere around 1820 (presumably) in Llanfachraeth in the hope of new lead.

I see from Evan's birth that his mother has the maiden name Evans and there is a marriage in Llanfaethlu as follows:

William Hughes (of Llanfachraeth) bachelor and Margaret Evans (otp) spinster were married in Llanfaethlu Church by licence with consent of parents on 20 Apr 1827. William Hughes signed, Margaret Evans signed by mark. Witnesses John Griffiths (Clerk) and John Hughes.

In the 1851 census at Tan Rallt, Llanfachraeth I think John the eldest son is 23 not 29 as transcribed and the place of birth of wife Margaret (and the children?) is Llanfaethlu (written Maethlu), which ties in with this marriage.

I hope I've been of help.

Thank you Dragon T. The mother's maiden name may prove useful.
