Union Workhouse Belfast
« on: Wednesday 11 November 15 10:40 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace the record for William McMullen b. 02 Mar 1839 born in the Union Workhouse.  I know his father was Patrick McMullen but I am trying to find out who his mother was.  I have tried the PRONI website but cannot find any records for the workhouse!  Anybody look at any records for me greatly appreciated.

You've posted on a Resource board which isn't for queries. Just click on 'report to moderator' to get your topic moved to the ANTRIM board.

Records- Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, 2 Titanic Boulevard, Titanic Quarter, Belfast BT3 9HQ. Holdings include: Board of Guardians' minute books; Workhouse registers; Indoor relief lists; Return of deaths; etc.

See www.proni.gov.uk for exact details of the workhouse records that they do hold- these records will not be available online so if you can't go in person or get someone to do so then you'll need to hire a researcher.

Hi,
The date of birth you have is too early for "the Union Workhouse" the building of which did not start until about mid 1839. I think that your man may have been born in an earlier "poor house" in North Belfast. See http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Belfast/.

I'm still trying to find a birth record for the Poor House in 1939.  I have looked into PRONI but as someone pointed out, nothing on line so looking for someone who would kindly look for me.  Record would be in BG/1. Since my previous post I have now found William's mother's name as Elizabeth Sara Walsh McMullen

Belfast Workhouse didn’t accept it’s first inmate till 1.1.1841, according to the link Aghadowey gave you. So William couldn’t have been born there in March 1839. (Construction hadn’t even begun). If March 1839 is accurate, he was born somewhere else. And you would need to know where in order to search for the records.

Is Lisburn Workhouse the same place as Belfast Workhouse?

No it's a separate Poor Law Union with it's own workhouse.

See: http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Lisburn/

The Belfast Workhouse was on the Lisburn Rd, but in Belfast. That might cause a little confusion, I suppose.

I see that your topic is still on the wrong board so perhaps you haven't yet asked a moderator to move it to the main ANTRIM board for you?
