John Hutchinson lived at Halstead Essex
« on: Thursday 12 November 15 00:55 GMT (UK) »
Previous research into John Hutchinson born 1820 in Halstead Essex has just proved to be wrong as the parents the researcher in the 80's found had additional children all baptised in Halstead as Hutchins, but known on Census and later as Houchin.

When John was married at St Andrew's Halstead in 1847 to Ann Harris, he was said to be 27, and the son of John Hutchinson, both labourers.
The 1851 Census at Halstead has him as being born at Halstead aged 30
He died in the Halstead workhouse in 1860 aged 40
On baptism for some of his children he is listed as either a labourer or a dealer.

There are three baptisms (i found at Halstead) for the possible father
John son of Philip and Judith 20 Nov 1785, possibly died young as there is a burial for John son of Philip c1787, Yet when Judith died in 1840/41 at Halstead her son John Hutchinson was executor
John Hutchinson son of John and Sarah 02 Feb 1787, but gain there is a burial entry for John son of John.
John Hutchinson base son of Jane Hutchinson 10 April 1787

National Archives have two John Hutchinsons born Halstead one served in the Navy and seems to show on Census records as unmarried

The other was a soldier in the 20th Foot
John Hutchinson born at Halstead, Essex enlisted at Hasl(ar) Hants 1st April 1809 aged 20 for 20 years unlimited service. He was in the 20th Foot.
Served in St Helena and East Indies 12 June 1819 until returned to Great Britain 19 May 1829
Dischared with pulmonari affiction and worn out and....... 29 Sept 1828
He was severely wounded in action in the Pyrennes 2 August 1813
He was 39 and 3/4 years of age 5 foot 8 and a 1/2 inches tall, Brown hair, grey eyes and of a ruddy complexion. By trade a labourer.
Signed and sealed by the commanding officer at Poona E I 18 December 1828
Lancashire Fusiliers - 20th Foot
WO97 chelsea pensioners british army service records 1760-1913
Box 404
Box Record Number 53

The 1827 census (per my researcher) Has at Frosts Yard John Hutchinson, 40, wife 29, a soldier and a boy of 9.
It also had at Mansfield John Hutchinson age 78, wife age 67, no children at home
(My John Hutchinson, labourer c.1820 was at Manfield, Halstead on the 1851 census?)

Would there be any records of births and marriages for soldiers of the 20th Foot?
Also if he shows as being at Poona, can he be the soldier home in Essex in 1827?

Thanks Colin

John and Sarah had another son John baptized 14 April 1789 Halstead.

Have you found John 1820/1821 baptism yet?

Essex Record Office Ref:   D/P 96/18/6 Register of Parishioners Halstead 1817-1837.
It states it was created in 1827 but covers the time period 1817-1837, so the John Hutchinson's you are looking for are not necessarily there in 1827. I would get a copy from the ERO to verify.

Added 1841 census Halstead Jn Hutcheson age 18, omitted from the index on ancestry, but he is below James Curtis ref Book 4 page 20 folio 332/13

Colin

There was also a Robert HUTCHINSON a private in the 20th of Foot, buried at Poona on 26 Sep 1827 age 26.

Might be a connection.

Essex Record Office has the General Ledgers for the Halstead Poor Law Union, the description is not very detailed but its worth a try by emailing the ERO to see if the general ledger lists dates and names of persons admitted/discharged from the workhouse. These can be a very good source of information.
Ref 1855-1858  G/H Z11
      1858-1863  G/H Z12

I noticed that 2 of John Hutchinson's children were baptized at St Andrews in Earls Colne and not Halstead possibly shortly after they were admitted to the workhouse, everyone had to be baptized.
John bap 10 July 1859 said to be born 7 January 1854
Jessie bap 10 July 1859 said to be born 2 December 1855
father John Hutchinson dealer in rags mother Ann.

Jessie was buried at Halstead 12 May 1864 age 8 from the Union House.
Ann (also known as Nancy) was buried 18 March 1862 age 12 from the Union House
