Hi there  :)

Could you add some dates to the above as this helps when trying to look at info.

Have you managed to find BMDs and census entries in Scotland for the family?

Have found an online tree here http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/1058664/person/6193692576  You need a subscription to be able to view. Another source here www.williamdavidson.com/wc107/wc107_090.htm

They show Peter McCann as having married a Margaret GEMMELL not Campbell. Possible marriage here https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTNH-73T

There are a few Peter McCanns, at least one other from Ireland and married to a Margaret, in the Ayrshire area. This is why it is important for you to work back up your line, verying details, names etc along the way...

The family were Roman Catholic? RC records for BMDS etc are always complicated before 1855 and the start of official registration on Scotland. However, I think there is an entry for a birth & christening for a son, Peter, to Peter and Margaret Gemmell in Ayrshire (at St Margaret's in Ayr) in 1844 on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. Would fit with this 1851 census entry:

Peter Mccann 51 coal miner b. Ireland
Agnes Mccann 15 b. Ireland
Margaret Mccann 10 b. St Quivox, Ayrshire
Peter Mccann 7 b. St Quivox, Ayrshire

Address: Main Road, Whitletts, Newton on Ayr

From www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl in 1851, Peter Snr showing as widowed.

Is this Michael and family here in 1861? He is living with sister Agnes and brother Peter. Peter Snr having died in 1860, also at Elba Street. The entry below:

Agnes Mckean 25 head, sewer b. St Quivox (Ireland in 1851)
Peter Mckean 16 brother coal miner b. St Quivox
Michael Mckean 35 coal miner b. St Quivox
Catherine Mckean 28
Peter Mckean 10
James Mckean 8
Margaret Mckean 4
Michael Mckean 2
John Mckean 6

Address: Elba St, St Quivox Ayr

The death registration of Michael McCann in 1880 in Ayr will help, if you don't have it yet, to confirm his parents' names. As will Peter McCann's snr's death in 1860 also in Ayr for tracing back to his parents and his wife's maiden name confirmation. You can view these both online here www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.

Spelling variations and mistransciptions are always a feature at this time  :-\ Just had another look for the family's 1841 census. I think they have been transcribed as MCCLANE. FreeCen have them this way, and they are a hardy experienced bunch of volunteers by area. Guessing the original image on SP looks that way too.

Peter McClane, 55 Collier b. Ireland
Margaret McClane, 30 b. Ireland
Michael McClane, 15 Cotton Hand Loom Weaver b. Ayrshire
John MCCLANE 10 Shoemaker b. Ayrshire
Agnes MCCLANE    5 b. Ayrshire
Margret MCCLANE 2 months b. Ayrshire

Address: George Street, Wallacetown, St Quivox Ayrshire.

Spelling of surnames was very fluid. In Ulster Campbell, Gamble, Gemmell & Gammell can all be used for same family.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you, Aghadowey  :) Didn't know that in Ireland Campbell could connect to that set of surnames. Makes sense then...which is good for the research. Likely Campbell has been used in Scotland for some of the registrations.
