Finding the missing link; Thompson and Cadwell
« on: Friday 13 November 15 10:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, Please excuse errors, I'm pretty new here.
I'm searching for my husband's family. His grandparents arrived in Australia from England and Scotland as young children and met and married in Australia. The Scottish line is progressing well thanks to help from other researchers!
The English, 'Thompson's' are a little more challenging. I'm hoping the more unique name 'Cadwell' is significant somewhere several of the Thompson family have Cadwell as a middle name.  This is what I have so far.
1.Richard Cadwell Thompson b 1904 Houghton-le-Spring. His parents;
2.James Thompson b 1873 West Rainton, Pittington, Durham and
3.Rebecca Robbins (1st marriage to F Robbins & 3 sons) ms Turnbull b 1868 Little Town, Durham.
James T's; (I think)
4. James Thompson 1857 West Rainton, D and,
5. Ellen est 1854 Rainton
Rebecca R's parents;
6. Alexander Turnbull b 1841 Wreckenton, D and,
7. Elizabeth b 1839 Pittington, D (lived Albion St, Murton East)
Unfortunately, the 'parishes' thoroughly confuse me, and my understanding of the geography of Durham is thanks to g maps.
I'm hoping someone might have information on some of these as I seem to be going around in circles. Also if anyone is aware of the connection of the Cadwell family to any of these that would be great!
Cheers and thanks in advance, JT

Hi Durhamgirl73, confirmation of James and Ellen as being James Thompsons parents...I haven't found anything conclusive.
Also if anyone knows of a Thompson husband with a Cadwell wife..

If you go to http://www.durhamrecordoffice.org.uk/Pages/AdvancedSearchPlacenames.aspx and put in a place name the map will show you the parish and adjacent parishes. Alternatively you can go to http://maps.familysearch.org/ which will list the parishes if you click on Durham County.

Hi Stanmapstone - will have a look. When there's several people by the same name I try to narrow it down by their addresses :) Thanks for the links - cool will check out Albion street too. cheers

Bear in mind that the link to Caldwell may be a little tenuous?!

I have an ancestor, whose middle name is the maiden name of his grandmother!
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

If that's the right group then we have:

James Thompson b c 1873-4 West Rainton (per 1901) or 1871-2 Cornforth (per 1911 free index).

Rebecca b c 1868-9 Littletown (per 1901) or Seaham (per 1911 free index)

1901 ref: RG13/4684/39/30

1891 shows "Rebbaca Robbins" with previous husband Fredric.  She is 23 b Littletown.

Have you obtained James & Rebecca's marriage certificate for paternal (etc) details?
