Wetheral Burial
« on: Friday 13 November 15 10:47 GMT (UK) »
Hello - I am researching the lives of WW1 soldiers in my local area (Burnmoor, Co. Durham) and have discovered that one gentleman was buried at Wetheral. Is there any kind person out there who lives close to the church and would be willing to locate and photograph the grave for me? The person concerned is Edwin Joseph ATKINSON, Private No.155026, Royal Garrison Artillery, 4th Reserve Heavy Battery, died 11 February, 1923, age 39, from wounds received at the battle of Cambrai.

Many thanks in advance for any help with this matter.

Do you know if there is a headstone if so this might be easy to find as all the headstones have been located around the walls of the church yard .

Hello Elizabeth - no, I'm afraid I don't know if there is a headstone for this gentleman. I would like to think there was a Commonwealth gravestone? I am not familiar with this churchyard, though. Thank you.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission only commemorated WW1 casualties who died 1914-1921.

As Edwin died in 1923, there will be no memorial.

As well as the churchyard there is a separate cemetery at Wetheral and he might be buried there. http://www.wetheralparishcouncil.org.uk/cemetery_photos.php

If your not in a hurry I'll look at the records for a plot reference to make it easier and may be able to go in the next week.

Hi
The grave reference is ward 4 Section B grave 45, Wetheral cemetry, Ashgate Lane. Had a look today but there wasn't a grave stone!
