St Marylebone Workhouse
« on: Sunday 15 November 15 14:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,
Does anyone know if there was a work house on  Milton Street, St Marylebone in 1841? I've found some ancestors who on the 1841 census who were living in an institution on Milton Street St Marylebone. I googled St. Marylebone  workhouse but couldn't see the address. So would this have been the workhouse?
Thank you in advance
Vicky

Milton Street is now Balcombe Street.  In 1841 the St Marylebone workhouse stood on Northumberland Street which is some distance away.

Can you identify from the 1841 census:
how many people occupied the establishment
who the owner or manager was
whether or not there are any staff professions (nurse, maid, warder etc).
This could give some leads in looking at old directories (or other sources) to see if they give answers.

All the best
Philip

Thank you.  The widow was living there with her grown up children who were all about 40. 7 children and 3 other people with different surnames. What other institution could it be?

Was the widow listed as Ind?  ie of Independent Means?  and where the 2 woman living with them listed a FS ie Female Servants??    Edit - If its the right family they look like a wealthy family with servants

Actually it doesn't say she is a widow but if she's the one in my tree then she is. Her name is Mary Whitehead born 1770s.  Doesn't mention anything about ind means or jobs. The other two women are not listed as servants. Just Says It's Milton Street St Marylebone and It's An Institution

Have you looked at the image rather than just the transcription?   I agree the image doesn't list Mary as a widow but she is listed Ind. in the occupation column and the two additonal woman are listed as FS.
