which Church in Limerigg?
« on: Monday 16 November 15 00:47 GMT (UK) »
I have just found a newspaper article which I think is about my husband's GGGrandfather Edward Findlay who we know was from Slamannan. The article is regarding his death in 1946 which occurred at Black Loch Farm, Limerigg. I am firstly assuming this dwelling will no longer be standing, but I am interested to find out more about the 50 years he was an Elder of the Established Church, but the article doesn't state which Church. If the Church is still open today would there possibly be a mention of him inside it? I don't know where to start researching.
Kind regards
Nerys

Re the house - I think this is it on an old map - but there appears to be house still in this location on modern maps  http://maps.nls.uk/view/74479608#zoom=3&lat=3743&lon=12775&layers=BT

A BBC Domesday Reloaded project including this area may be of interest which includes religion http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/domesday/dblock/GB-284000-669000/page/5

The Falkirk Herald, 6 July 1946 reported on a social evening to welcome the new Minister Alexander Cameron. M.A. An "Edward Findlay" is mentioned as one of the "three existing office bearers" of the Church.

I am interested to find out more about the 50 years he was an Elder of the Established Church, but the article doesn't state which Church.

If it says 'Established Church' it means 'Church of Scotland' so at least that should narrow down the search a bit.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi Nerys,

You could contact the Church of Scotland directly to ask if they hold any records of church elders for the period you need.  Address is 121 George Street, Edinburgh, phone  0131 225 5722. Not sure of email but I will ask my daughter tomorrow if she can find out any more info as she works at "121" in the Finance Department.

May take a couple of days but I will get back to you.

Hi Dorrie,
Thank you for the info, I will write to the Church of Scotland directly. I have conflicting information as the newspaper report says he died at his Black Loch Farm, Limerigg and his death Certificate has his death as Heatherfield, Longriggend so a bit more digging yet.
Thank you
Nerys

Hope your daughter is safe

Hi Nerys,

Spoke to my daughter this afternoon and she will try to find out more at work tomorrow with the info you have given. She says that as the newspaper article gives the minister's name - Alexander Cameron - church records still held at "121" should tell which church it was.

So from that she will hopefully be able to find out if and where any old records are kept.

Being a Church Elder was and still is a great honour. Normally appointed for life even when no longer fit enough to carry out pastoral duties.

Hang fire until I contact you again.

Dorrie

P.S. My daughter has worked there since she left school in 1984. Only taking Maternity Leave to have her two boys.

Hi Nerys its me again.

Are you on Ancestry? If so there are about 4 trees which have an Edward Findlay in them.
The information they have is on a gentleman born in the Slamannan area on 30/1/1871 married Elizabeth Jane Close in 1895. I have only had a quick look but if it matches there is lots of other info including children parents etc.
