look up death John Wood
« on: Tuesday 17 November 15 04:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

Previously I have had some assistance trying to establish when John Wood and his wife Elizabeth (Betty) Garside arrived in South Australia. Thank you to Cando, giblet, Essie. I am still not sure if it was on the Baboo or Rajasthan.

As I live in WA I cannot access the Register of Emigrant Labourers Applying for Free Passage to WA to see if I can garner any further info about the correct Wood family.

So another avenue for consideration is trying to establish John and Elizabeth's date of deaths and perhaps this information may shed some further light on where they were born and married and then link to date of arrival in SA.

Cando noted that marriage notice in 1878 for daughter Mary Jane notes she is the dau of Late John Wood of Saddleworth.

The last child born to John and Elizabeth was Mary Jane in 1849 so the death would be between 1849 and 1878.

again any assistance would be appreciated.

The information you can expect to find on an SA death cert:

https://www.genealogysa.org.au/genealogy-sa/website-01/whats-in-that-certificate.html

If he had a daughter Catherine then he was deceased by 1873

I think the notices might mean Saddleworth in the UK:

A possible marriage:

Parochial Chapelry of Saddleworth, County of York

29 Aug 1836

John WOOD of Waters in this Parochial Chapelry, Bachelor
Betty GARTSIDE of the same place

Witnesses were Samuel KENWORTHY and Joseph WOOD

Saddleworth was historically in Yorkshire but now in Lancashire.

I can see a place called Waters in a Saddleworth Directory but can't find it on a map.

Thanks Debra

I haven't identified a Catherine in the family yet!

Thanks for info on marriage - which could be them.  It could be Saddleworth UK but I don't think so.
Other children born here. Although perhaps he/they did go back to the uk?

Hi...am having lots of problems with internet so am unable to access most sites except rootschat and if I am very patient, a few others ;D ;D  Joys of living in a remote area where the internet was quite good until Telstra upgraded it to 4G.  I'm better off than many of my neighbours who have had no access since 5 Nov.  I can't search TROVE at all...just sits. :(

Link to your previous request about this family.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=692223.0

So using my own resources.  This appears to be Elizabeth's death.  There is no headstone in the Saddleworth cemetery however they may have been buried in one of the smaller cemeteries in the area.

WOOD Betsey Elizabeth  53 years  Status Widow  Relative no recorded.
13 Jan 1871
Residence Saddleworth  Death Place Saddleworth    Gil 41/270

See what I can find with my very limited access.

Cheers
Cando

This is a possibility and I will have to check how far reaching the Adelaide registration district was in 1857....quite large I think.

Perhaps you could search on TROVE for a death notice or obituary around the date below.

Elizabeth was born c1818 and this John c1817.  I can't see another possiblity on my resource for John's death prior to 1871 when Elizabeth died.

WOOD John  37 years  Status not recorded  Relative not recorded
15 Feb 1854
Residence (not recorded)  Death Place (not recorded)   Ade 3/43

Cheers
Cando

Cando

I checked Trove for the date for Betty and found nothing

Added: Nothing for John 1854

Though looking at the 1841 census I found Queen Elizabeth playing as a servent :D

Well Queen Elizabeth Wood anyway - I checked the image as well and it is Queen - sorry to digress
