William Sisson
« on: Tuesday 17 November 15 16:51 GMT (UK) »
I need some help in finding the right William Sisson. I have one record and this is correct as he married my 2nd great aunt Mary Jones.

Name:   William Sisson
Registration Year:   1887
Registration Quarter:   Jan-Feb-Mar
Registration district:   Basford
Parishes for this Registration District:   View Ecclesiastical Parishes associated with this Registration District
Inferred County:   Nottinghamshire
Volume:   7b
Page:   216
Records on Page:
Name
Ernest Walter Byatt
Mary Jones
Edith Shepperley
William Sisson

I find there are a lot of conflicting family trees that have Mary Lacy as being William's wife around the same period. I did find that marriage record.

Name:   William Sisson
Registration Year:   1887
Registration Quarter:   Oct-Nov-Dec
Registration district:   Basford
Parishes for this Registration District:   View Ecclesiastical Parishes associated with this Registration District
Inferred County:   Nottinghamshire
Volume:   7b
Page:   304
Records on Page:
Name
Mary Lacey
William Sisson

So this is where the confusion begins. When and where was "my" William Sisson born and who were his parents. When was the death of William Sisson as well.

William Sisson and Mary Jones did have a daughter Laura who was born abt 1890 in Nottingham, England. Laura immigrated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada abt 1913 and married there. Her mother Mary Sisson also moves to Canada and it is shown in the 1945 voters list living with her daughter who is now married and she is a widow.

Any information you can find for me would be much appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Married to Ann.

It may be advisable to purchase the marriage cert for William/Mary Jones is the hope that William's father is recorded on the marriage cert to help you find the correct lineage for William.

There's not a lot of correlation with marriages and subsquent baptisms on the FHS disc and William and Mary's marriage isn't on there at all - did they marry in a registry office?

What there is, in the appropriate timescale:

Marriage 1864 07 23   HUCKNALL TORKARD St Mary Magdalene        William   SISSON   Ann   LIMB
(no baptisms that match this couple)

1868 12 26   NOTTINGHAM St Mary        William   SISSON   Martha Ann   MILWARD
(again no matching baptisms)

1870 02 27   ARNOLD St Mary    William   SISSON   Emma   WATSON
children:    1870 05 30   Elizabeth
1877 11 25   Kate     (family living at Bond St, father FWK for both these)

then no more marriages until
1890 10 04   EASTWOOD St Mary    William   SISSON   Ann   PEARCE
and no matching baptisms here either!

However there are baptisms for other families with father called William Sissons:
William and Sarah in Basford, 1891 and 1893 (William a miner)
William and Sophene in Hucknall Torkard in 1893 (shawl manufacturer)
William and Clara 1895, Notts St Paul

Not sure that this helps at all though maybe it will rule some out. The only thing that seems potentially interesting here is the name Sophene which is unusual.
Bradbury (Sedgeley, Bilston, Warrington)
Cooper (Sedgeley, Bilston)
Kilner/Kilmer (Leic, Notts)
Greenfield (Liverpool)
Holyland (Anywhere and everywhere, also Holiland Holliland Hollyland)
Pryce/Price (Welshpool, Liverpool)
Rawson (Leicester)
Upton (Desford, Leics)
Partrick (Vera and George, Leicester)
Marshall (Westmorland, Cheshire/Leicester)

Hi,
Thank you for your replies.
The only information I have on their marriage is as shown. I tried to look for the parish "7b", I had no luck. It wasn't listed. What is strange is the two Mary, two William Sisson, same year, same area.
I did find the marriage record for Ann Limb and William Sisson and discovered Ann died in 1886. As I go into the next census 1891, he has remarried but to which Mary?...lol
So this is where I am stuck moving forward. I know William and Mary did have a child Laura from information I received from my 1st cousin 1x. Laura did go to Canada as well as Mary. I am guessing Mary left England after William passed away.

Hi Jane,

There is no parish 7B that's the Volume number for the general register's office to look up when you order a certificate and Basford also cover's some of Derbyshire so marriage may have been there.  My advise to you is to buy the birth certificate for Laura Sisson:

Births Dec 1890   (>99%)
Sisson    Laura        Basford    7b   171

as that will give you the mother's maiden name it's the only way I can see you finding out which Mary that William married  and then buy the marriage certificate to be able to move on with your research.

The marriage of William Sisson and Ann Limb I can get from Nottingham Archives for you.

NG

Edit: Just looked at Laura's marriage on Familysearch and it has her mother as Mary Jones so no need to buy the birth Cert after all just the marriage of William Sisson and Mary Jones.
