tiree 1950s
« on: Tuesday 17 November 15 22:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi all
My father in law was born in Glasgow in 1945 but through difficult times was sent to the island of Tiree where he was brought up in foster care with other children. He is now 75 years and very unwell he talks of Tiree with found memories and we hope to try and take him back soon.
I would love to try and put together a collection of memories for him...pictures of the school ect.
He would have been in school in the 50s and left the island around 1961.
I relay would appreciate any help input or guidance .
Thanks in advance
Jackie. xx  :)

Jackie, there is a book called "Childhood in Question" that might give you a good insight in the background and lives of many children around the time you are looking at for your father in law. Think you can get it on amazon (www.amazon.co.uk/Childhood-Question-Children-Parents-State/dp/0719053943).

Some snippets here in google books www.rootschat.com/links/01gia/ from page 163 for others' experiences connected with Tiree.

To add to Elwyn's details on the school house, lovely snippet here www.scottishbooktrust.com/heylipol-schoolhouse Not clear on year on this.

See also from Pg 33 onwards re the school here here www.aniodhlann.org.uk/documents/exhibitions/Ministers%20and%20Deep%20Sea%20Captains.pdf

Pg 51 re Foster children and life there.... I think it would be good if you had a read through all really!

Jackie,

Ask to join the following Facebook group. There will be people there who almost certainly knew your father, as well as there being pictures of Tiree at that time:
