If you put John Burns Cavan in the Applotment books
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
There are 6 results, there could be others with farms too small to pay a tithe, but it would give you places to search.
Then it depends on religious denomination. If RC you can look here http://registers.nli.ie/

The parish on the Applotment book is a Civil Parish not the RC one but that can be worked out if necessary, need denomination first.

My second great grandmother was an Ellen Burns born 1841 in Cavan, wonder if they are related. I haven't been able to track her back much further as the female line gets tricky. I think her father might have been a Terrence Burns (1810) who married an Ellenor ?

RC registers are online... but if you don't know Parish then it is just a matter of checking each.
