By sheer luck I ran across a copy of the register of marriage between Isaac and Sarah posted on Ancestry.com but cannot honestly tell whether the groom's name is a signature or was written by the clergyman who solemnized the marriage. But I will follow up with the poster for more information.

I have an account with FamilySearch but have not used the research center close to me for quite a while. I'll look more deeply into their microfilm resources.

Thanks, Pam

All of the writing looks the same hand to me.

It looks like a register entry from the GRO and says it at the top.  Not original signatures.  But since it does not state he signed with an X the parish register will have the signature.

Janis,

Thanks for the advice. I had been having a hard time finding the location of anything other than transcriptions, however, I'm going to try an email to the Woodhorn Museum archives in Northumberland to see if they have the original register covering St. John parish marriages in 1853. I'm assuming it would no longer be at the church. I'll post a follow-up if anything comes of this.

They can make a copy of the page in the church records.  I am not sure how much they charge for this service though.  It is probably on their website.
