William SMART on the 1861 census
« on: Thursday 19 November 15 18:58 GMT (UK) »
I'm not sure why I can't find William Smart and his family in 1861

In 1851 he's living on the High Street in Laurencekirk with his first wife Ann and children; William 4, John 3 and David M. age 1.

In 1871 he's at 7 Alma Terrace, Laurencekirk with his second wife Elizabeth along with William now 23, Ann D. 12, James 11, David 5 and Mary J. age 3 - all the children are showing as born Laurencekirk. On each census until 1901 he's living at 7 Alma Terrace and is always listed as a saddler.
Thanks

No birthyear or birthplace shown for him - 1851 shows 1822 Fordoun Kincardineshire

Will ask moderator to move your post to Kincardineshire board

Oops, sorry CaroleW I should have mentioned his birth - as you say 1822, Fordoun on the 1851. On the 71 it is still 1822 but now Benholm, same for 91 then back to Fordoun in 1901.

Strange as they seem to show up on the Scotlandspeople index for the 1861 census,
but not on Ancestry or Findmypast.

An SP search for William Smart in Laurencekirk in 1861 brings back three:

William Smart aged 39
William Smart aged 14
William Smart aged 29

The last one is the only one that appears in a search on A*cestry or Family Search - the first two look likely to be your man and his son - it wouldn't be the first time that a census sheet had been missed from indexing by FS and A*  ;D

Thanks Ruth and Isobel - so only on SP - that definitely looks like them. I was thinking a really bad transcription was the reason I couldn't find them but it looks like no transcription at all!
