William Brailsford B c 1833 Chesterfield D 1874 Melbourne Derbyshire
« on: Thursday 19 November 15 21:13 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for the marriage and parents of the above ( he was a Lace Manufacturer)
I know his wife was called Maria ( or possibly Marie) and she was born circa 1836 in France
She is shown on the 1861 census ( earliest I could find) married to William and as a naturalized British subject
Can anyone help?
Many thanks

There's a marriage Jun Qtr 1857 Nottingham for William Brailsford GREENWOOD and Maria KERSHAW.

Their daughter Alice BRAILSFORD seems to be with the KERSHAW family in 1861.

On 1871 the Brailsford children [transcribed by Ancestry as Brenlsford] are with their aunt Rosene M Kershaw in Nottingham

WILLIAM BRAILSFORD of Melbourne Derbyshire...was buried at Melbourne 13.04.1874 aged 36....which means that he was likely to have been born nearer 1838 than 1833
His widow MARIA BRAILSFORD....living in Derby at the time of her death..was buried with her late Husband at Melbourne 07.04.1891 aged 55...........which means she might just have snook onto the 1891 Census.......
I have my doubts about the Chesterfield birth c 1833..and suggest, in view of later history, and age at death..that his Birth is more likely to be the one registered at Belper District JAS 1839.....a Birth certificate would give the necessary details........
EDIT..have since found an 1838 entry for his possible birth in Chesterfield District.

Thank you Mabel and Derek solved quite a few mysteries
Including why Maria was shown as french but a naturalized British citizen as the Kershaw family must have worked in France prior to 1861 as they had all their children in Calais
Thank you once again
