Mary Murdoch or Murtagh
« on: Friday 20 November 15 16:47 GMT (UK) »
I’m looking for information about the parents of Mary Murtagh/Murdoch. In the initial application for Parish relief in Glasgow in 1903 Mary Murtagh - Mrs McGee, aged 58, (ie DOB 1845) born in Co Cavan Ireland. Her father Andrew Murtagh a tailor, mother Catherine Hagan.

Next day the application is checked up on to make sure all is correct, this shows some differences

Mary Murdoch – Mrs McGee aged 55, (ie DOB 1848), born Cootehill Co Cavan. Her father Andrew Murdoch a tailor, mother Catherine Hagan

Mary is shewn as having married Peter McGee They are down as having been married “29 years ago in Drumgoon, Co Cavan, Ireland” which would make it around 1874.

However on her daughter Olivia’s birth certificate issued in Glasgow in January 1973 her parents marriage is shewn as Cootehill Co Cavan February 1866

The change from Murdoch to Murtagh would, i assume, would result in how the official heard the surname being pronounced

Can anyone shine any light on my elusive great grand mother and her equally elusive parents ?

They are down as having been married “29 years ago in Drumgoon, Co Cavan, Ireland”  aren't they?

Drumgoon is Drumgoon and Cootehill is Cootehill

http://www.logainm.ie/en/4737 and Zoom in.... you'll see Drumgoon miles from Cootehill

Wonder what they checked to get results the next day in 1903.

As I understand it the applicant(s) make a verbal application to the authorities giving their details. A note is taken of this. Next day the top cat sends out one of his  minions to check that their circumstances are as they have claimed, eg do they live where they say, does the house they are living in look as if their circumstances are as they claim.

The geographical situation as regards Cootehill & Drumgoon are as it was written on the Poor Relief statement, the accuracy of it I can not pass judgement on.
