Joseph Bradley B circa 1826 Rochdale Lancashire
« on: Sunday 22 November 15 08:32 GMT (UK) »
I am searching for his baptism
I believe he was the son of John & Susannah Bradley ( he from Ireland she from Burnley)
They moved from Lancashire to Yorkshire
Joseph married Rebecca Whiteley and raised a family
On various census years he showed his birthplace as Rochdale
Can anyone help?
Many thanks

parents marriage?

Marriage: 7 Sep 1818 St Peter, Burnley, Lancashire, England
John Bradley - (X), Wool Comber, Bachelor, This Chapelry
Susannah Smith - (X), Spinster, This Chapelry
    Witness: James Hey; James Hargreaves

and I would guess this was their first son

Baptism: 12 Dec 1819 St Peter, Burnley, Lancashire, England
Robert Bradley - Son of John Bradley & Susan
    Abode: Burnley
    Occupation: Wool Comber

As the son after Joseph was born in Yorkshire they may have moved just after Joseph's birth

He is shown as 15 on the 1841 census but as you know this census is notorious for rounding up and down in 5's so he could be 2-3 years either way
They were living in Bradford in 1841
John 40
Susannah 40
Robert 15
Joseph 15
John 12
Nanny 11
Richard 7
Mary 3
If the baptism of Robert is correct he would be 22!

I am not convinced that Joseph was the son of John & Susannah as as you say he always says his birthplace was Rochdale when the John & Susannah family stick to Burnley

What makes you think that they were his parents please

As far as I can see they only had one child in Burnley
Then Joseph ???
Then they moved to Bradford
Joseph Got married and wedding certificate shows father as John Bradley a wool comber which is what he was
Afraid that is it

Hi

There can be mix ups over parish boundaries and place boarders sometimes and  depending on where the place is located and nearest church by road was the church not always in the same parish or country. This lead to a person could be baptised in a parish with their abode in another parish or country if the parents of the child being baptised live near a parish boundry.

Burnley was in the parish of Whalley, which boarded Rochdale parish (Part in Lancashire and part in Yorkshire ) which also covered lots of sub chapelry towns  Lancs and Yorks .

Whalley parish also was on the boarder with Bradford and Keighley parishes.

Clicking on maps in links usually enlarges

--------------------------------------------------------

Therefore where did John and Susannah live in the Burnley and more important where did later they live in Bradford parish

Nonconformist

possible

John son of John Bradley birth- 1826

Register of Births and Baptisms of the Baptist Chapel of Keighley, Yorkshire from 1786 to 1837, with a Register of Marriages from 1827 to 1828, and a Register of Burials from 1824 to 1836

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Looking at the 1841 census for Bradford they were living in Spinkwell Terrace Bradford on the 1851 census at Bolton Road Bradford
On the 1841 census it says whether born in the county of Yorkshire or not and looking at the children it would appear that they arrived in the area between 1826 and 1829
I have asked Bradford Local Studies Library for copies of baptisms as I do not any subscriptions to any on line records apart from Ancestry or Findmypast
However looking at the 1851 census again
John and Nanny are shown as being born in Bradford
Interestingly a later child Richard is shown as Burnley
And Mary is shown as Horton in Yorkshire
I am getting more confused!!
