Thomas Barnes Birth & Parents
« on: Monday 23 November 15 06:33 GMT (UK) »

Hi,

I have a Thomas Barnes/Barns married to Mary Kates 1761 Coombe Keynes, Dorset.
They had  George bap 1764 East Stoke, Dorset.
Thomas  bap 1766 Eaststoke, Dorset

I'm looking for Thomas Snr, perhaps born abt 1733-1738 Parents.
Have  searched Dorset OPRs. Film from Family History.
I do have a couple of possibilities but nothing concrete.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kind Regards
Tweedie

There is a Thomas baptised in Church Knowle on 14 Dec 1735 s/o George and Susanna, but you've probably considered that one. Date is in middle of your expected range, father is called George like Thomas's oldest son. Church Knowle isn't too far from E Stoke and Coombe Keynes - it would be much easier to take the direct route between the villages then than now - no military firing range to avoid.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Hi Lizzie L,
Thank you for your reply.
Yes I have George Barns of Combe & Susanna, (nee Scot of Wool) married 20 April 1734  Nearest possilility,  Is there any way of finding any confirmation other than Family History Centre  and looking at the original entries, and what would they show.  The further back in time you go there is less info on the entry.
Kindest Regards

The information on entries of that age can be variable, depending on the amount of detail the clerk bothered to record. I have found plenty that only give bride and groom's names and the date. I am never sure that if they were from outside the parish or widowed it would be mentioned and if not stated it means they were single and otp. Some older record name witnesses, but many do not.
If the parents for the baptism I found in Church Knowle were from Combe Kaynes and Wool, then it fits even better on location.

Susanna Barns, 'wife of George', was buried in Wool in 1777. A George Barns is buried there in 1782 but, more interestingly, the partial remains of a will of a George Barnes of East Stoke exists. It was written in 1778 and the two portions refer to '..daughter Susannah wife of ..', ''...in law Richard T...', '...in law James Seymer...' '...my daughter M...' and '..Thomas Barns son...'.
This is clearly the same George whose daughter Susannah married Richard Talbot in Wool in 1772 (George was a witness) and whose other daughter Mary married James Seymour in 1763 (also witnessed by George). Both daughters married men who were entitled 'yeoman', as was Thomas when he married in 1761, so the family owned land.

This, of course, doesn't prove anything; but it does offer a few more lines of research, and connects Wool and East Stoke.

Others have been on the trail:

In 1782 the Salisbury and Winchester Journal referred to him as:
GEORGE BARNES, late of Highwood, in the parish of East Stoke, the county of Dorset, yeoman, deceased

Hi Richard,

Mmm interesting. You have more info on the will than I found. Thankyou.

I do have another Bearns/Barnes name that could be of interest.

Robert  & Mary Bearns/Barnes. He married Mary King of Sturton Caundel 15/8/1729

They had a Thomas born 21/11/1735 Lydlinch. Richard & Mary had 6 sons.

Would this be reasonably close to East Stoke,Wool etc?

Regards

I would think Lydlinch and Stourton Caundle were a bit far from East Stoke and Wool to be considered. Even in the '60s when I was a child in Wool, the older folk considered anywhere north of Blandford a strange and unknown country.
