Census and death help please
« on: Monday 23 November 15 18:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi all
I have a John Heatlie born 1833 in Roxburgh died 1875 in Edinburgh who was married to a Grace Grant b.1833 Knockando Moray, they married in 1859 in Edinburgh, they had I believe 8 children some died young. I have found Grace at home in Edinburgh with their first child William Heatlie aged 1 but there is no sign of John her husband with them. By 1871 they are all back together still in Edinburgh with 5 of their children. John Heatlie died in 1875 but I cannot find any of their children or Grace Heatlie in 1881. One of their daughters, also called Grace died in 1888 and her mother was deceased by this time. With that time frame 1875 when John died and 1888 when their daughter died I have tried looking for Grace Heatlie nee Grants death but I cannot find anything. There other children if it helps are:
William 1859
Mary Ann 1861
John 1863-1892
Agnes 1865
Grace 1866-1888
Jane Grant 1868
Alexander 1872-1872
Elsie 1872-1872

Grace Grants parents were Alexander Grant and Mary MacKinnie.
Thanks in advance

I wonder if Grace might occur in any records as Grizel (or variant) - I have found quite a few cases of a Grizel also being known as Grace and vice versa. Have you tried that? I'm assuming you have tried all variants of H*tl*?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi Carole
Yes Grace is still alive in 1875, however on their daughters death cert in 1888 Grace is deceased. At least this gives a bit of a time frame but I still haven't been able to find her death. Thanks for looking x

John Heatlie (husband) was buried in St Giles Edinburgh 1875
Son John Heatlie was buried in St Giles Edinburgh in 1892
Daughter Grace was buried 1888 in St Giles Edinburgh
Twin Alexander and Elsie buried in 1873 in St Giles Edinburgh.

The census records I have for this family have come from the SP site as I cant find them on the Scotland census on Ancestry.

Pleasure!!!

Could this be Agnes in 1881? I only have access to the transcription on ancestry.
age 16, boarder, F, born Edinburgh
9 Queens Place seamstress
Ellen Temple   78
Ann Wilson   73
Agnes Heatley   16
ED: 9, Household schedule number: 21, LINE: 5

ADDED: Almost no reason for Grace snr not to have been buried at St Giles then  ???
