MacKenzie Family - Tranent
« on: Tuesday 24 November 15 00:48 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the parents of Alexander MacKenzie/McKenzie.  Alexander MacKenzie was born about 1760 and married Christian Knox in Tranent.  He died before 1823 from the marriage record of his daughter Christian.  The marriage record of his daughter indicates that they were from Elphingstone.  From naming conventions I suspect that his father is named Alexander.  They followed the traditional naming conventions pretty formally for several generations.  I am trying to push back further.  Any help that anyone can provide would be a great help.

Scott

I am still trying to find the parents of Alexander MacKenzie.  I have looked in the surrounding parishes to no avail.  Any suggestions?

They were all baptised in Tranent Parish Church, but in FreeReg John and Thomas were given abode of Elphingstone (sic) and William was given abode of Portseton (sic)

Using Naming Convention, would suggest Grandparents as :-

and

John and Agnes Knox.
Scotland - Buchanan, Thomson, Pat(t)erson, Stewart, Ritchie, Tracey
Ireland - Tracey, Conroy, Pat(t)erson.

Thank you - I have A possible William Knox and Christian Runsayman as the parents of Christian Knox.  The family alternated between alexander and Thomas for first born males for a couple of generations.  I have been looking for a Alexander and Christian, as well as Alexander and Agnes to no avail.  This is really frustrating me.....

Hi

On SP, I have found a death of a Christian Knox aged 80yrs, on 15 Sep 1834, her married name was Mackenzie and fathers name was John Knox. The death was registered in St Bernards, Edinburgh. I haven't printed the OPR, as it will not give much more info.

I found that and downloaded in from SP.  It indicates that the cause of death was an accident, and that the place of death was Tipperlin.  Now this begs the question what was the accident that caused her death?

I also found a OPR for Christian Knox, born 29 January 1755 Dunfermline, baptized 07 February with parents John Knox and Janet Crauford.  Dunfermline is across the bridge from Edinburgh so a good possibility....

I just found that OPR for birth in Dunfermline, parents were married 11 Feb 1741, so there could be a large family as well.

I have found the obituary in the Scotsman 24 Sep 1834, and this is not our Christian Knox. It was a Christian Mackenzie who was married to James Knox, Land Surveyor of Tipperlinn, author of the "Map of Edinburgh, Basins of the Forth, Tay, etc" So easy to take the wrong path. Sorry.

That is interesting as the death record indicates married name is MacKenzie and father's name is John.  In the obit, what is the cause of death?
