Just a thought......

When did Margaret Sutherland die?
Did Ronald re-marry to Jane whereby Duncan gave her name when he gave the details to the Army as they would be man & wife, not realising she would then be classed as his Mother rather than step-mother & he may not have known she was his step-mother if he was young when his mother died?

Sorry Annie, I don't know as it wasn't me who found that information. I'm currently looking for 351179 Lance cpl Duncan MacLennan of the Royal Scots who died in France - that might be him, if I knew where to look for his family.

CWG have sent me the link to Lance cpl Duncan MacLennan service no 351179 and he's not the man I'm looking for as this one was commemorated on Ploegsteert memorial, not France.

Just fiddled with on Scotlands People's free  search and I can't see a death for either Ronald or wife Jane in Scotland based on the dates on the gravestone memorial!

However there is a death of a Ronald Maclennan age 71 in June Qtr 1931 Kingston, Surrey  Vol 2a  Page 520  and a death of a Jane Maclennan age 72 Dec Qtr 1934 Skirlaugh, Yorkshire Vol 9d Page 351 that would match!!   Is the stone in the Borders a gravestone or maybe a memorial??

Ronald MacLennan died 2/5/31 and Jane Mclean on 30/10/34 - the dates are on their gravestone in Eckford churchyard  in the Scottish Borders.

My search is over - the CWG helpline has come up with the answers I was looking for! The soldier is Duncan Mclean MacLennan, Lance cpl 351179 Royal Scots who died 9/4/18. He is on the Ploegsteert Memorial which is in Belgium, not France as stated on his father's grave.
Thankyou to those who took the trouble to help me.
