Did any of them marry as their marriage certificate would give some information on their father

This is 39 Eagle St in 1891. All helpfully born "Wales"!

John Phillips    63
Judith Phillips    54
Ellen Phillips    26
David Phillips    21
Annie Phillips    18
John Jones    18 - servant, milk carrier

there's an announcement for the marriage of one of the Phillips' daughters from that address in the Cambrian News. tracing them back, the Phillips come from Lledrod, Cardiganshire

That family is looking quite possible. Sarah is widowed by 1891, but stays in Pencwm, and I have found an obit for hr in 1917 (in welsh). In summary

Widowed 33 years previously, so she raised 5 small children alone (and from the hints in the item, sometimes in pretty straightened circumstances)

Her two sons decided to leave the unhealthy mines and head off to the capital where there set up successful retail businesses, two daughters followed but the youngest (Margaret) stayed home to comforter her mother right to the end.

What a lovely tribute to her in "Y Cymro".

Looks like the Pencwm, 1881 family, is the one.
