Eleanor/Ellen Page (nee ...??) of Hailsham, born Jevington circa 1821
« on: Saturday 28 November 15 19:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi Sussex board :)

I'm fairly new to family history and have really been enjoying the addictive detective work & puzzle-solving! I've hit a bit of a dead end with my GGG grandmother Eleanor/Ellen Page and I'm hoping someone here can help me make some progress!

Here's what I have so far

1841 census, Civil parish Brighthelmstone
Ellen Page   20, born in Sussex
Husband - Thomas Page   25
Daughter - Herrott Page   2 Mo

1851 census, Civil parish   Hailsham
Eleanor Page, 30, born in Jevington
Husband - Thomas Page   37
Daughter - Harriott Page   10
Son - Thomas Page   8
Daughter - Emer Page   4
Daughter - Mary Ann Page   1

1861 census, Civil parish   Folkington
Ellener Page, 40, born in Jevington
Husband - Thomas Page   44
Son - Thomas Page   18
Daughter - Emma Page   13
Daughter - Mary Ann Page   11
Daughter - Charlotte Page   9
Daughter - Fanny Page   4
Son - Charles Page   1
Grandson - James Page   2

1871 census, Civil parish   Hailsham
Ellen Page, 53, born in Jevington
Husband - Thomas Page   57
Daughter - Fanny R Page   14
Son - Charles Page   11
Daughter - Eliza M Page   7

1881 census, Civil parish   Hailsham
Eleanor Page, 61, born in Jevington
Husband - Thomas Page   63

1891 census, Civil parish   Jevington
Ellen Page   65, born in Jevington
Husband - Thomas Page   72

When she appeared on the 1841 census she was already married to Thomas. With a 2-month-old baby I'm guessing that they hadn't been married very long, but I haven't been able to find a record of the wedding. The census records her birth as approx 1821 in Jevington fairly consistently, but I haven't been able to track down a record of her birth or christening either.

Any help would be really appreciated, I'd love to find out her maiden name!

Hi and welcome  :)

I can't see the marriage either but a birth certificate for one of the children should give her maiden name if all else fails.

Is Thomas Page born in the same area?

Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Hi Milliepede, thanks for the welcome and the advice :)

Thomas Page's birth is listed as Folkington, Sussex in the census - only a few miles away from Jevington.

I looked at this yesterday and I think the best advice is that given by Millipede ie to get a birth certificate of one of the children. This is because

1.   Jevington is not covered on the IGI index

2.   Even looking at the 1841 census for Jevington it is impossible to identify a family Eleanor may have come from

3.   There is no coverage on www.freereg.co.uk that helps

4.   The area is not covered on either findmypast or Ancestry

5.   The Sussex OPC http://www.sussex-opc.org/ has very few records on Jevington and none that are of help

6.   The Sussex family history society have various publications http://www.sfhg.org.uk/ but I did not see any that are of immediate help

7.   Parish transcripts for Jevington are available eg at the London family search centre (LDS familysearch) currently housed at Kew or at Society of Genealogists in central London.

8. SFHG have a SFHG Sussex Baptismal Index
This data is available in an online database, accessible by SFHG members so you would have to join the society to use it

9. I suspect Ellen\Eleanor may not actually be her given name
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Fantastic, thanks for your help, Nell!

This info led me to discover a thread on a different forum by someone researching the same branch with some more potential leads.

The hunt is on :)

I am pleased you have made progress. To aid others who may pass this way and not have access to that site I have posted the salient points below (hope that is OK)

Regarding Eleanor's maiden name, I believe it to be HENTY.

I have access to Jevington St. Andrew's baptism records. I've looked from 1815 to 1825 and found only one Eleanor:

First names Eleanor
Surname HENTY
Baptism Date 11-Mar-1821
Father first names Edward
Father surname HENTY
Mother first names Ansley (later referred to as Ainsley)
Mother surname HENTY
Occupation Labourer
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.
