COLWELL of Lyddington
« on: Wednesday 02 December 15 09:45 GMT (UK) »
I looking (hopefully) for a link between two branches of the Colwell family in Lyddington. If there is a relationship these families were heavily involved in the fellmonger / parchment and skin trade in Rutland and in Gretton, Northamptonshire.

I have bootmaker Richard COLWELL (born abt 1801 according to the 1841 census)

He had a daughter Betsey (or Elizabeth) who married Tom Lenton Barrow, fellmonger of Gretton.

and I have John COLWELL (b abt 1811) - farmer and fellmonger

whose daughter Anna married Thomas Myers (who ran parchment making in Gretton)

Were Richard and John COLWELL brothers?

Many thanks

Alan

Errors in your post

Quote
I have bootmaker Richard COLWELL (born abt 1801 according to the 1841 census)

No you don't - his name was Robert

Quote
and I have John COLWELL (b abt 1811) - farmer and fellmonger

Birthyear in 1841 is 1801 and in 1851 it's 1800

Did you not check FS first?  Baptisms showing for both

Yes, my mistake - rushed Richard into the post instead of Robert. I also hadn't looked back before 1800 so hadn't spotted John Colwell's baptism.

HOWEVER: this brotherly relationship has cemented for the village of Gretton (Northamptonshire) what a Professor of Social Anthropology  told me several years ago "In a population of between three and five hundred people, after six generations or so there are only third cousins or closer to marry. During most of human history, people have lived in small, isolated communities of about that size, and have in fact probably been closer to the genetic equivalent of first cousins, because of their multiple consanguinity"

In the census of 1901 just about everybody can show a relationship to just about everybody else. I traced back to these two brothers from a young man of 15, apparently unconnected with any branch of the family, who was boarding with a recently widowed member of my own.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction - and the error of my ways!

Cheers Alan

On the Marriage of Tom Lenton BARROW/Elizabeth READTHOFF, 9 Aug 1869, both were Widowed.
Her Father is Robert Colwell, Occp Railway Gatekeeper.
When she married William Readyhoff 1859, (abode Liddington, Rutland), Father Robert was a Shoemaker.

Very unusual change of Occp!

John Colwell was a Witness to the Marriage of Robert C to Elizabeth INKLE 14 Sept 1820 St Mary, Gretton

Sorry if you already have this from FreeREG

Inkle - oh dear, another entangled surname. Interesting that Robert Colwell was listed as 'of this parish'

Many thanks

I would be interested to know of the other two children.

I would also be interested to know where Mary PEACH came from. That's another family that has intertwined itself around my own family line. Is she a 'fruit' of Lyddington? I've also got Peaches from Stoke Dry and also from Gretton (which is where the main line of my Colwell family played itself out)

Many thanks

Hi
The other children are as follows;
Lyddington
Mary Colwell baptized 9 Feb 1803 Burial at Lyddington on 4 June 1804
Mary Colwell baptized 19 May 1805
Henry Colwell baptized 21 December 1806

There is a baptism for a Mary Peach at Lyddington as follows
Mary Peach born 8 December 1777 baptized 6 January 1778 parents Robert Peach & Mary
so if she is the Mary that married John Colwell she would have been about 20yrs old.

There is also a burial that may be of interest to you ?
Lyddington 11 November 1781 Robert Peach ..... a Tanner

Hope these help you
