St Ethelreda Church, White Notley
James Card/Carder single of Black Notley married Rebecca Boyiten single of this parish on 12 November 1767. Witness Robert Boyiten. Rebecca and Robert make their mark, James signs James Card.

St Peter and St Paul, Black Notley.
Banns of Marriage for James Carde of Black Notley and Rebecca Boyton of White Notley published 25 October, 1 and 8 November 1767.

Spellings are as in registers.

Children baptized of James and Rebecca at Black Notley
James 4 July 1773
Mary  4 July 1773
Sarah 21 May 1775
John 2 Feb 1777  buried 14 October 1777*
John 22 November 1778
Robin 28 January 1781

The burial of John does not give an age or relationship my assumption child of James and Rebecca.

Noted burial Black Notley
Ann Card 7 March 1785.

Essex Record Office ref: D/P 264/13/1A/259
Index of Settlement Papers
James Card with wife and 3 children, given a settlement certificate at Black Notley, moving from Braintree. Date 29 July 1793
This appears to be James son of James and Rebecca returning to his village of birth. I don't know if the actual document gives anymore information than the index, however Braintree would be a good place to look for his marriage.

Many thanks amondg for that info, I am most grateful.

Although I already had the marriage for James and Rebecca plus the details of the children I am still glad you posted them, I found those details very early in my research so it will be great to be able to double check what I have.

As for the burial of Ann Card I didn't have that, it's very interesting, not sure where she fits in as yet.

Being reminded of the witness to the marriage was timely because I'm hoping next year to get stuck into Essex Ancestors, high on my list of priorities is investigating a James Card baptised 1 Jan 1743 at Braintree St Michael the Archangel, mother Mary, no father's name.  On a trip back to the UK and Essex some years ago I did manage to fit in some time in the ERO, I found no marriage or burial 1742 to 1767 for James in Braintree PRs, nor a marriage for his mother Mary in those PRs.  I have a sneaking suspicion he will turn out to be an ancestor, if so, he's my first Illegitimate one.

Thanks also for the advice on the resettlement papers, once I sort out James Card senior I'll look into James junior.  I saw recently in a site an indication of a James Card marriage to a Martha, I'll have to retrace my steps and check it out, it could be James Card junior I think.

So, many thanks for your time and effort on my behalf, it is much appreciated and most useful.  Like a lot of people I often wish I'd taken up genealogy before I left Chelmsford to live here in Australia, one of those big "ifs".
