McManus, Mailwood, Leitrim
« on: Friday 04 December 15 23:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I am trying to find the families of my great-great-grandparents John and Ann Ward. I believe that John was born in Leitrim in 1824 although I am not sure where exactly and Ann was born in Mailwood (Mail-Wood), Leitrim in 1830/1. Apparently she was a McManus and her father was Hugh McManus.
They had several children, some born abroad as John was in the army. These are the ones that I am aware of
Mary A b 1853 in Padiham, Lancashire
John Joseph b 1857 in Hong Kong, China
Clarissa b 1859 in Cape of Good Hope, South Africa
Catherine b 1861 in Cape of Good Hope   "       "
Sarah J b 1863 in Aldershot, Hampshire
Ellen b 1865 in Ramsbottom, Lancashire and
Thomas b 1869 in Ramsbottom,     "

Any information on either family would be gratefully received and I would be delighted if there are any other family descendants I could be put in touch with. Thank you,
Lesley

References to Mealwood in Kiltoghert here:

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01glx/

While I can't find a baptism for an Ann McManus, there is one in the RC parish of Kiltoghert for a Thomas McManus who was baptised on 15 September 1833, parents recorded as Hugh McManus and Anne Lee.  Just a possibility for a sibling... (right page, 5th entry down from top):

There is a reference in the following link (Table of the principal Limestone Quarries in Great Britain and Ireland) to a Mealwood quarry, the nearest post town being Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01gm0/

There is also the following 1913 Hansard reference "Mr. THOMAS F. SMYTH asked the Chief Secretary why an old age pension has been refused to Thomas Gilblane (No. 2673), senior, Mealwood, Drumsna, county Leitrim, in the Carrick-on-Shannon pension district ...".  Drumsna is a townland (inc. a village) just E / SE of Carrick-on-Shannon, here it is in the OSI 6" mapping series, there are lots of "woods" around (to the NW in particular) and there is indeed a quarry to the north of that townland: http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V2,599564,797560,10,7

But in the event, the 1911 census shows Thomas Gilbane living a very short distance northwest, in the townland of Minkill (rather than Drumsna):
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Leitrim/Carrick_on_Shannon/Minkill/652635/

And there is a quarry in Minkill:  http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V2,597970,799153,10,7

I can also see several other quarries in the immediate vicinity, for example,  in the townlands of Kildorragh and Tully.  So I'm hoping Mealwood is around this area and that a local person might be able to confirm.

Edited to add:  BTW, I can see a reference on the internet to the effect that Mealwood is the English version of the Irish Minkill (coill míne / small wood), but I can't vouch for its accuracy.

Ellen and Thomas Ward were probably baptised at St Joseph, Ramsbottom if they were R.C. The parish existed in 1862 although the church wasn't built until 1880. They were born in Holcombe sub-district. Other possible venues for R.C. baptisms in 1860s were St. Mary, Haslingden, St. Marie or St. Joseph, Bury.
Post-1860 baptisms at Emmanuel, Holcombe , C. of E.  aren't on Lancashire OPC.

Hi Don't know if you are still looking for info but Thomas was my great grandfather.
In the 1891 census they are in Lancashire and Ann is listed as a widow living with John, Catherine,
Ellen and Thomas. Thomas he married Rose Ann Thompson in 1896. She died in 1900.
I have some more info if you are interested but not much about Ann and John.

Hi I don't know if the post by Hallmark is in response to my post, if it is thank you for your response but to be honest I don't have a clue what it's meant to be telling me.

Hi Paul. Dont know when you posted about McManus family but Thomas's elder sister Clarissa was my great grandmother. I have other info on the family up to 1921 census and grave register for Ann died aged 80 in 1911, Ellen died 1924 aged 56 and Catherine  died 1926 aged 67. Buried local to me, dont know when John ( born about 1867 Hong Kong) died or where he is buried. Also havent found Mailwood in Leitrim yet.
Regards David
