Annie Hawkins
« on: Thursday 10 December 15 14:15 GMT (UK) »
did anyone see the story in the Leicester Mercury about a  woman who was trying to discover if  a drowned young lady Annie Hawkins  around 1910

 was the birth mother of her father who was
  "adopted"  early 1900's   named Percy Faulkner Hawkins.

I wonder if anyone could help find  clues to proving it
I emailed the article author to suggest they look for  a Mr Faulkner ;

 + if Annie gave her son that middle name in order to get payment off the birth father
there may be a court record .

My g-gmother did that ..and once she got the affiliation order + some payments went to baptise her daughter  with a more traditional middle name than on birth cert.

Birth 21 Dec 1904 of that name - was he adopted straight away?

If not he may be on census with mother (long shot)

oops I did dates from memory
I'll modify orig post

. the article didn't say how old he was when taken in but did imply her death was suicide

and would be between the 1901 and 1911 census

maybe poor Annie tried to keep him as single parent in early years

Sorry I should have asked when she died.

His birth certificate would confirm if his mother was called Annie - has nobody obtained that as a first point of information?  ???

Or is it already know that his mother was called Annie and just what happened to her?

  I suggested she could look for baptism records  might show a different address for  the mother

people did stay local in those days so the 1911 census would have Percy Faulkner Hawkins with his adopted family

adoptions weren't official so he may have kept his birth name

 Often children are adopted by family members
maybe their address in 1901 would link them to Annie  .

He knew his mother was Annie Hawkins but as it's a common name how would he know it was the right one ;

( My grandmothers birth mother was called Charlotte Roberts + my mother spent years researching the wrong woman )

Thanks, brigidmac for starting this thread, you beat me to it! This is the link to the article:
http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/Looking-Annie/story-28321612-detail/story.html

This Annie was born 1885, the daughter of Francis and Charlotte (nee Herson) and one of 7 daughters. Francis was a baker, the family was living at Belgrave Gate in 1901, Charlotte then being a widow. Percy is registered as being born at Payne St., which is off the Melton Road. The canal of course is not far away
Francis and Charlotte were born at Stamford, Lincolnshire. Interestingly, there is a Percy Hawkins born there in 1903. Was 'our' Percy named after him perhaps?
What I can't get is the Faulkner, I'm guessing that was the father's name, but haven't researched further. Interesting little problem, would be nice to crack it!

I was just about to post similar details to those by susieroe.

Some additional information:-
His adoptive mother appears on the 1901 census at 55, Taplin Road, Wadsley, Ecclesfield, Wortley, Yorkshire, and doesn't seem to have any link to the family:-
Agnes Hall, Widow, 44, Laundress, born in Norton, Derbyshire.
Lillan   Hall, Daughter, 22, Laundress, born in Liverpool.
Thomas Hall, Son, 20, Table Knife Cutler, born in Ecclesfield, Yorkshire.

An Annie Hawkins married to John Lumber in the same year that Percy was born.

Yes, I saw that one. She would have been 35 when Percy was born. But they married in the March quarter so why wouldn't the name on his BC be John and Annie Lumber? He'd be just about legitimate too so no problem there. The only reason I can think of is that they moved to Somerset. Could it be couldn't take the baby? Doesn't sound awfully feasible though.
